Rugby League War Of The Roses
The War of the Roses (also known in its later years as the County of Origin Series) was the annual inter-county rugby league match between the Historic counties of England, historic counties of Lancashire rugby league team, Lancashire and Yorkshire rugby league team, Yorkshire. The fixture began in 1895 as part of the County Championship (rugby league), County Championship until 1983 and continued as a stand-alone fixture until 2003 when the game was last played. The match achieved prominence because the two counties are considered the Rugby league in England#Popularity, 'heartland' of rugby league in Europe and are therefore traditionally the two strongest teams. Furthermore, the neighbours share a Roses rivalry, historic rivalry originating in the Wars of the Roses (1455–1487) from which the series takes its name. The Lancashire rugby league team is an English representative rugby league team consisting of players who were born in the Historic counties of England, historic county of Lancashire or who first played for a club in Lancashire. Rivalry Until 2003, Lancashire played Yorkshire rugby league team, Yorkshire in the annual Rugby League War of the Roses, War of the Roses game. This match was part of the County Championship (rugby league), County Championship until 1983 when the competition stopped and Roses went on to become a stand-alone event. The Salford Red Devils are a professional rugby league club in Salford, England. They play home games at Salford Community Stadium in Barton upon Irwell and compete in the Super League, the top tier of British rugby league. Salford Red Devils have won the League Championship six times and Challenge Cup once. The club's traditional home colours are red white and blue. They have a local rivalry with Swinton Lions and other significant rivalries with Oldham and Rochdale. History Early years The club was founded in 1873 by the boys of the Cavendish Street Chapel in Hulme, Manchester. Using a local field, the boys organised matches amongst themselves before moving to nearby Moss Side.
