Rowing At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Women's Eight
The women's eight event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place from 24 to 30 July 2021 at the Sea Forest Waterway. Seven nations were represented with one boat each; 56 rowers and 7 coxswains competed. Background Women first competed in Olympic rowing at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and the eight was competed all Olympics since then, such that this was the twelfth appearance of the event. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) is limited to a single boat in the event. There were seven qualifying places in the women's eight: * 5 from the 2019 World Championship (New Zealand, Australia, the United States, Canada, and Great Britain) * 2 from the final qualification regatta (China and Romania) Schedule The event was originally scheduled to start on 25 July 2021, but a poor weather forecast for 26 July resulted in a revised regatta programme, with the heats for the eight moving to the previous day. Sea Forest Waterway
The is a regatta venue for rowing (sport), rowing and canoeing, situated in Kōtō and Ōta, Tokyo, Ōta, Tokyo Bay, in Japan. History The venue was built for the 2020 Summer Olympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics, Paralympic Games. Construction began in 2016 and it was inaugurated in June 2019. It was built by Tokyo Metropolitan Government on the waterfront site and is the only rowing venue in Tokyo that meets international standards. The first international event that was held here were the 2019 World Rowing Junior Championships. Rowing at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Olympic rowing events are held from 23 to 30 July 2021. The hopes to be able to continue to maintain it after the Olympics. Eight (rowing)
An eight, abbreviated as an 8+, is a racing shell used in competitive rowing (crew). It is designed for eight rowers, who propel the boat with sweep oars, and is steered by a coxswain, or "cox". Each of the eight rowers has one oar. The rowers sit in a line in the centre of the boat and face the stern. They are usually placed alternately, with four on the port side (rower's right hand side – also traditionally known as "stroke side") and four on the starboard side (rower's lefthand side – known as "bow side"). The cox steers the boat using a rudder and is normally seated at the stern of the boat. Because of the size, weight, and speed of the boat in comparison to the 4+ and 2+, it is generally considered unsafe to race the 8+ coxless or to have a bowloader cox.
