Rowing At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's Single Sculls
The men's single sculls competition at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich took place from 27 August to 2 September at the Olympic Reggatta Course in Oberschleißheim. There were 18 competitors from 18 nations, with each nation limited to a single boat in the event. The event was won by Yury Malyshev (rower), Yury Malyshev of the Soviet Union, the nation's fifth victory in the event; the Soviets returned to the top of the podium after having their four-Games (1952–1964) winning streak broken in 1968. Alberto Demiddi of Argentina took silver, the seventh man to win multiple medals in the single sculls (adding to his 1968 bronze). Wolfgang Güldenpfennig earned bronze, the first medal for East Germany as a separate team (East German rower Achim Hill had won two gold medals for the United Team of Germany in 1960 and 1964). Oberschleißheim
Oberschleißheim (, , in contrast to " Lower Schleißheim") is a municipality in the district of Munich, and a suburb to Munich in Bavaria, in southern Germany. It is located 13 km north of Munich (centre). As of 2005 it had a population of 11,467. Murray Watkinson
Murray Paul Watkinson (11 June 1939 – 19 January 2004) was a New Zealand rower. He competed at the 1964 and 1972 Summer Olympics in the single sculls and placed fifth and tenth, respectively. He won a European bronze medal in this event in 1971. Watkinson was born in 1939. He started training at the West End Rowing Club in 1953 when he was 13 years old. He won his first major title, a silver medal in the double sculls, at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, partnering with his brother Peter. At the 1964 European Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, he came fourth in the single sculls. Two months later at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he came fifth. Jim Dietz (rower)
James William Dietz (born January 12, 1949) is an American rower and rowing coach. Dietz was born in 1949 in The Bronx. He obtained his education at Northeastern University, from where he graduated in 1972. Dietz had a very long rowing career, lasting from 1967 (when he won gold at the 1967 World Rowing Junior Championships in Ratzeburg in single sculls) until he retired from competitive rowing in 1983. He started at Pan American Games in 1967, 1975, 1979, and 1983. He competed in single sculls at the 1971 European Rowing Championships (sixth place) and again two years later in 1973 (eleventh). Seán Drea
Seán Joseph Drea (born 3 March 1947) is a former Olympic rower and world record holder from Ireland, specialising in the single scull. He won the Diamond Challenge Sculls (the premier singles sculls event) three years in a row at the Henley Royal Regatta, where he set the course record, and was the first Irish rower to win a World Championship medal securing silver in the 1975 World Championships. Biography Drea lives in Greystones, and is originally from Bagenalstown, County Carlow. He tried many sports before joining Neptune Rowing Club after moving to Dublin to work in advertising. He later moved to Philadelphia, where he attended St. Joseph's University on a sports scholarship and also rowed for Vesper Boat Club. James "Jim" Butterfield (born 1 September 1950 in Hamilton, Bermuda) was a rower for Bermuda at the 1972 Olympics. As of 2015, is the only person to ever represent Bermuda in rowing at the Olympics. Melchior Bürgin
Melchior Rudolf Bürgin (born 17 October 1943) is a former Swiss rower who competed at the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics. Bürgin partnered Martin Studach in the double sculls rowing for Switzerland at the 1964 Summer Olympics when they came fourth. Over next three years, Bürgin and Studach dominated the double sculls scene. In 1965 they won the Double Sculls Challenge Cup at Henley Royal Regatta and the European Championships. In 1966 they won the World Championships. They won the European Championships and the double sculls at Henley again in 1967.
