Rommel Fernández
Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez (15 January 1966 – 6 May 1993) was a Panamanian footballer who played as a striker. The second Panamanian to play in Europe, he spent almost his entire professional career in Spain, amassing La Liga totals of 104 games and 32 goals – 162/56 both major levels combined – in representation of four teams. In 1993, he died in a car accident, at the age of just 27. Club career Fernández was born in the Panama City neighborhood of El Chorrillo. El Chorrillo
El Chorrillo is a corregimiento within Panama City, in Panamá District, Panamá Province, Panama with a population of 18,302 as of 2010. History It was founded April 29, 1915, and was originally populated by immigrants working on the construction of the Panama Canal; many were from the Antilles. The impoverished area is the hometown of Manuel Noriega and was heavily damaged during the United States invasion of Panama in 1989. Other former residents of note include boxer Roberto Durán and poet Hector Miguel Collado. Its population as of 1990 was 20,488; its population as of 2000 was 22,632. The Estadio Olímpico Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez, named after the Panamanian football star Rommel Fernández (1966–1993), is a multi-purpose stadium in Panama City. It is used for different sports, but mainly football (soccer) games. It was inaugurated February 6, 1970, and was designed to accommodate the XI Central American and Caribbean Games in 1970. Listed below are the dates and results for the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the North, Central American and Caribbean zone (CONCACAF). A total of 24 CONCACAF teams entered the competition. The North, Central American and Caribbean zone was allocated 2.25 places (out of 24) in the final tournament. The 1994 FIFA World Cup was the 15th FIFA World Cup, the world championship for men's national soccer teams.
