Romantic Novelists' Association
The Romantic Novelists' Association (RNA) is the professional body representing authors of romantic fiction in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1960 by Denise Robins (first president), Barbara Cartland (first vice-president), Vivian Stuart (first elected chairman), and other authors including Elizabeth Goudge, Netta Muskett, Catherine Cookson, Rosamunde Pilcher and Lucilla Andrews. The RNA has a membership approaching 1000, composed of authors and publishing professionals. It promotes and celebrates romantic fiction across all sub-genres. It holds events, including an annual conference and workshops/seminars on aspects of writing craft and the publishing industry. The organisation has regional chapters, which meet regularly to discuss issues of concern to writers of romantic fiction. Denise Robins
Denise Robins (née Denise Naomi Klein; 1 February 1897 – 1 May 1985) was a prolific English people, English Romance novel, romantic novelist and the first President of the Romantic Novelists' Association (1960–1966). She wrote under her first married name and under the pen-names: Denise Chesterton, Eve Vaill, 'Anne Llewellyn', Hervey Hamilton, Francesca Wright, Ashley French, Harriet Gray and Julia Kane, producing short story, short stories, drama, plays, and about 170 Gothic romance novels. In 1965, Robins published her autobiography, ''Stranger Than Fiction''. At the time of her death in 1985, Robins's books had been translated into fifteen languages and had sold more than one hundred million copies. Evadne Price
Evadne Price (28 August 1888 – 17 April 1985), probably born Eva Grace Price, was an Australian-British writer, actress, astrologer and media personality. She also wrote under the pseudonym Helen Zenna Smith. She is now best remembered for her World War I novel '' Not So Quiet'' (published in America as ''Stepdaughters of War'') which adapts the style of Erich Maria Remarque's '' All Quiet on the Western Front'' to depict the experiences of British female ambulance drivers. During her lifetime she was known for her many romance novels, some of which were serialised in national newspapers, as well as for her children's books starring the popular character Jane Turpin. In the 1950s, she became a regular performer on television, as a storyteller and astrologer. For 25 years she published a monthly astrology column in ''SHE'' magazine. Christian Walford
Noreen Ford Dilcock (born 28 March 1907 in Kingston upon Hull, England - d. 1985 in Walsall, England, United Kingdom) was a British writer of romance novels from 1952 to 1977 under different pseudonyms: Norrey Ford, Jill Christian and Christian Walford. She was the second elected Chairman (1963–1965) of the Romantic Novelists' Association and also was a former vice-president of the organization. She was the Walsall Writers' Circle founder and life president. Biography Noreen "Norrey" Ford born on 28 March 1907 in Kingston upon Hull, England, UK. Her parents were Robert Ford and Esther Richardson. She studied at Hull's French Convent, Ravensworth School and Appleton-le-Moors. She married James Louis Christian Dilcock (1911–2000), a Midland judge and lay preacher at Walsall's St Paul's Church. The marriage spent much time travelling the world. Hilary Preston
Hilda Nickson, née Pressley (18 November 1912 – 1977), was a British writer of over 60 romance novels published from 1957 to 1977, under her married and maiden name, and as Hilda Pressley. She was vice-president of the Romantic Novelists' Association. She was married to the writer Arthur Nickson (1902–1974). Biography Hilda Pressley was born on 18 November 1912 in Maltby, England, UK. She married the Western fiction novelist Arthur (Thomas) Nickson (a.k.a. Arthur Hodson, Roy Peters, John Saunders, and Matt Winstan). She published her first novels as Hilda Nickson at Herbert Jenkins in the 1950s, before being taken on at Mills & Boon under her married name and as Hilda Pressley. Most of her novels were republished under the Harlequin imprint, sometimes with different titles. Her first novels were popular doctor-nurse romances; love triangles frequently feature in her plots, and she also set her novels in Italy or Spain. Hilda Pressley Nickson died in 1977. Sophie Leyton
Sheila Frances Walsh (née O'Nions; 10 October 1928 – 20 January 2009) was a British writer of romance novels from 1975 to 2001; she also wrote as Sophie Leyton. In 1971, she joined the Southport Writers' Circle and was elected life president in 1986. In 1980 she became the vice-president of the Romantic Novelists' Association and later was the 13th elected Chairman (1985–1987). Biography She was born Sheila Frances O'Nions on 10 October 1928 in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of Wilfred O'Nions, a civil servant, and his wife Margaret (Moran) O'Nions. She studied at the Notre Dame Convent at Birkdale, Southport. Kate Alexander
Tilly Armstrong (8 April 1927 – 6 July 2010) was a British writer of romance novels from 1978 to 1998. She also wrote as Tania Langley and Kate Alexander. Armstrong was born in Sutton, Surrey. Before she began her writing career, she worked for the World Health Organization in Geneva, then in Canada for 18 months, and then became the personal secretary to the Chairman of British Steel, Lord Melchett. She was the fourteenth elected Chairman (1987–1989) of the Romantic Novelists' Association, and was one of its vice-presidents, until her death at 83, on 6 July 2010, at Carshalton, England, UK.
