Rodrigues Triple Junction
The Rodrigues triple junction (RTJ), also known as the central Indian ceantriple junction (CITJ) is a geologic triple junction in the southern Indian Ocean where three tectonic plates meet: the African plate, the Indo-Australian plate, and the Antarctic plate. The triple junction is named for the island of Rodrigues which lies north-west of it. The RTJ was first recognized in 1971, then described as a stable R-R-R (ridge-ridge-ridge) triple junction based on coarse ship data. Boundaries The boundaries of the three plates that meet at the Rodrigues triple junction are all oceanic spreading centers, making it an R-R-R type triple junction. They are: the Central Indian Ridge (CIR, between the African and Indo-Australian plates) with a spreading rate of 50 mm/yr; the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR, between the African and Antarctic plates) 16 mm/yr; and the Southeast Indian Ridge (SEIR, between the Indo-Australian and Antarctic plates) 60 mm/yr. The SEIR has the ...

Rodrigues Solitaire
The Rodrigues solitaire (''Pezophaps solitaria'') is an extinct flightless bird that was endemism, endemic to the island of Rodrigues, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Genetically within the family of Columbidae, pigeons and doves, it was most closely related to the also extinct dodo of the nearby island Mauritius#Mauritius Island, Mauritius, the two forming the subfamily Raphinae. The Nicobar pigeon is their closest living genetic relative. Rodrigues solitaires grew to the size of swans, and demonstrated pronounced sexual dimorphism. Males were much larger than females and measured up to in height and in weight, contrasting with and for females. Its plumage was grey and brown; the female was paler than the male. It had a black band at the base of its slightly hooked beak, and its neck and legs were long. Both sexes were highly Territory (animal), territorial, with large bony knobs on their wings that were used in combat. The Rodrigues solitaire laid a single egg that ...

Rodrigues' Rotation Formula
In the theory of three-dimensional rotation, Rodrigues' rotation formula, named after Olinde Rodrigues, is an efficient algorithm for rotating a vector in space, given an axis and angle of rotation. By extension, this can be used to transform all three basis vectors to compute a rotation matrix in , the group of all rotation matrices, from an axis–angle representation. In terms of Lie theory, the Rodrigues' formula provides an algorithm to compute the exponential map from the Lie algebra to its Lie group . This formula is variously credited to Leonhard Euler, Olinde Rodrigues, or a combination of the two. A detailed historical analysis in 1989 concluded that the formula should be attributed to Euler, and recommended calling it "Euler's finite rotation formula." This proposal has received notable support, but some others have viewed the formula as just one of many variations of the Euler–Rodrigues formula, thereby crediting both. Statement If is a vector in and ...

Rodrigues' Formula
In mathematics, Rodrigues' formula (formerly called the Ivory–Jacobi formula) generates the Legendre polynomials. It was independently introduced by , and . The name "Rodrigues formula" was introduced by Heine in 1878, after Hermite pointed out in 1865 that Rodrigues was the first to discover it. The term is also used to describe similar formulas for other orthogonal polynomials. describes the history of the Rodrigues formula in detail. Statement Let (P_n(x))_^\infty be a sequence of orthogonal polynomials on the interval , b/math> with respect to weight function w(x). That is, they have degrees deg(P_n) = n, satisfy the orthogonality condition \int_a^b P_m(x) P_n(x) w(x) \, dx = K_n \delta_ where K_n are nonzero constants depending on n, and \delta_ is the Kronecker delta. The interval , b/math> may be infinite in one or both ends. More abstractly, this can be viewed through Sturm–Liouville theory. Define an operator Lf := - \frac (Wf')', then the differential eq ...
