Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Earl Of Leinster
Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Earl of Leinster ( ; 26 June 1584 – 8 October 1659), was an English Royalist and supporter of Charles I during the English Civil War. Life Cholmondeley was born in Crouchend, Highgate, Middlesex, on 26 June 1584, the son of Sir Hugh Cholmondeley and Mary Holford (daughter of Christopher Holford of Holford). He was created a Baronet on 29 June 1611. He was High Sheriff of Cheshire in 1620 and served as MP for Cheshire in 1625. He was created Viscount Cholmondeley of Kells (Ireland) in 1628 and Baron Cholmondeley of Wich Malbank (i.e. Nantwich in Cheshire) on 1 September 1645. On 5 March 1646, he was created Earl of Leinster in Ireland. He died 2 October 1659, and was buried in the chancel of Malpas church. St Oswald's Church, Malpas
St Oswald's Church stands on the highest point in the market town of Malpas, Cheshire, England, on or near the site of a Norman motte and bailey castle. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building and is recognised as being one of the best examples in Cheshire of a late 15th to early 16th-century church. It is an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Chester and the deanery of Malpas. Its benefice is combined with those of St John, Threapwood, and Holy Trinity, Bickerton. Alec Clifton-Taylor includes it in his list of 'best' English parish churches. Earl Of Leinster
Earl of Leinster was a title in the Peerage of Ireland. It was created on 3 March 1646 for Robert Cholmondeley. He had already been created a baronet, of Cholmondeley in the County of Chester, in the Baronetage of England on 29 June 1611, and Viscount Cholmondeley in the Peerage of Ireland on 2 July 1628. He was created Baron Cholmondeley in the Peerage of England on 1 September 1648. Lord Leinster died childless in 1659 and the titles became extinct. However, the viscountcy of Cholmondeley was revived two years later in favour of his nephew Robert Cholmondeley (son of Hugh Cholmondeley), who is the ancestor of the Marquesses of Cholmondeley. Also, the Earl's other brother Thomas Cholmondeley was the ancestor of the Barons Delamere. The family surname is pronounced "Chumley". Sir Richard Grosvenor, 1st Baronet
Sir Richard Grosvenor, 1st Baronet (9 January 1585 – 14 September 1645) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1621 and 1629. He is an ancestor of the modern day Dukes of Westminster. Grosvenor was born at Eaton Hall, Cheshire, reportedly the only surviving male child of 17 children. His father was Richard Grosvenor of Eaton, and his mother was Christian, the daughter of Sir Richard Brooke of Norton Priory, Cheshire. His early education was by John Bruen, a local puritan and at the age of 13 he went to The Queen's College, Oxford. He matriculated in 1599 and graduated BA on 30 June 1602. Political career In 1602 Grosvenor was High Sheriff of Cheshire. He was knighted by James I in Vale Royal on 24 August 1617. In 1621, he was elected Member of Parliament for Cheshire. Anthony St John
Sir Anthony St John (c.1585-by 1651) was an English Member of Parliament (MP) who sat in the House of Commons in 1624 and 1625. He supported the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War. Biography St John was a son of Oliver St John, 3rd Baron St John of Bletso and his wife Dorothy Reid, daughter of Sir John Rede or Reid, of Oddington, Gloucestershire. He was admitted fellow commoner at Queens' College, Cambridge on 9 November 1601. He was knighted on 5 August 1608 at Bletsoe together with his brother Alexander, also a future MP. Apart from Alexander, four other brothers, Oliver, Rowland, Henry and Beauchamp were to become MPs. In 1624 St John was elected Member of Parliament for Wigan and in 1625 MP for Cheshire. William Booth (MP)
William Booth (10 April 1829 – 20 August 1912) was an English Methodist preacher who, along with his wife, Catherine, founded the Salvation Army and became its first General (1878–1912). This Christian movement, founded in 1865, has a quasi-military structure and government and has spread from London to many parts of the world. It is one of the largest distributors of humanitarian aid. Early life William Booth was born in Sneinton, Nottingham, the second son of five children born to Samuel Booth and his second wife, Mary Moss. His birthplace is now a museum. Booth's father was a nailmaker and builder from Belper in Derbyshire but, during William's childhood, the family descended into poverty. Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Viscount Cholmondeley
Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Viscount Cholmondeley (died 22 May 1681) was an English peer. Lord Cholmondeley was the son of Hugh Cholmondeley and Mary Bodvile. Sir Hugh Cholmondeley was his grandfather and Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Earl of Leinster, his uncle. He succeeded to the estates of his uncle Lord Leinster in 1659 and two years later he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Viscount Cholmondeley, of Kells in the County of Meath. Cholmondeley married Elizabeth Cradock, daughter of George Cradock of Caverswall Castle. He died in May 1681, and was succeeded in the viscountcy by his eldest son Hugh, who was created Earl of Cholmondeley in 1706. His second son George became a prominent soldier. Malpas, Cheshire
Malpas ( ) is a market town and a civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It lies near the borders with Shropshire and Wales, and had a population of 1,673 at the 2011 United Kingdom census, 2011 census. Etymology The name derives from Old French and means "bad/difficult passage". The parish also once contained a place called ''Chathull'', whose name is attested in 1333 as ''Nant Chathull''. This is notable because the first element of ''Chathull'' is thought to derive from Common Brittonic, from the word surviving in modern Welsh as ("wood"). This word must have been a place-name in its own right which, adopted into English, then became the basis for a new place-name, ''Chathull'', whose second element is from Old English ("hill") and which therefore meant "hill at Chat".
