Road To Bali
''Road to Bali'' is a 1952 American comedy film directed by Hal Walker and starring Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Dorothy Lamour. Released by Paramount Pictures on November 19, 1952, the film is the sixth of the seven ''Road to ...'' movies. It was the only entry in the series filmed in Technicolor and was the first to feature surprise cameo appearances from other well-known stars of the day. Plot George and Harold, American song-and-dance men performing in Melbourne, Australia, leave in a hurry to avoid various marriage proposals. They end up in Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin, where they take jobs as deep sea divers for a prince. They are taken by boat to an idyllic island on the way to Bali, Indonesia. They vie for the favors of exotic (and half-Scottish) Princess Lala, a cousin of the Prince. A hazardous dive produces a chest of priceless jewels, which the Prince plans to claim as his own. Hal Walker
Hal Walker (March 20, 1896 – July 3, 1972) was an American film director. He was known for doing some of the earliest Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis films such as ''At War with the Army'' and ''Sailor Beware (1952 film), Sailor Beware'' and some with the team of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope, directing ''Road to Utopia'' and ''Road to Bali''. Early years Walker was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, and was a private in the Marine Corps during World War I. After he was discharged, he drove a taxi in Chicago for two years. He also was a traveling salesman for a company that made dress patterns. Career After beginning in the film industry as an extra and a player of bit parts, Walker worked for years as an assistant director in films, learning the business "from the ground up". Devi Dja (born Misria Dja; August 1, 1914 – January 19, 1989), better known as Miss Dja, was an Indonesian-born American actress, dancer, and singer. A member of the Dardanella Opera group, founded by Willy A. Piedro, who later became her husband. Steve Calvert
Steve Calvert (born William Seeger; June 28, 1916, Peoria, Illinois – died March 5, 1991, Los Angeles County, California) was a prolific gorilla suit performer in many Hollywood films and television shows from the late 1940s through the 1950s. He took the stage name Calvert from Calvert Whisky. Biography Calvert knew many film stars from his career as head bartender at Ciro's, a Sunset Boulevard nightclub, and worked occasionally as a stand in and stunt performer. When he got to know Robert Lowery as the actor's stand-in in 1948, Lowery was able to get Calvert into the Screen Actor's Guild. That same year, Ray Corrigan whom Calvert knew and admired, sold Calvert his gorilla suits, which he had used in a multitude of Hollywood films, for a down payment of $1800, also providing some acting pointers. He is perhaps best remembered for his roles in the films '' The Black Cat'' (1934) and ''The Adventures of Robin Hood'' (1938). Leon Askin (; born Leo Aschkenasy, 18 September 1907 – 3 June 2005) was an Austrian actor best known in North America for portraying the character General Burkhalter on the TV situation comedy ''Hogan's Heroes''.
