Riddle
A riddle is a statement, question or phrase having a double or veiled meaning, put forth as a puzzle to be solved. Riddles are of two types: ''enigmas'', which are problems generally expressed in metaphorical or allegorical language that require ingenuity and careful thinking for their solution, and ''conundra'', which are questions relying for their effects on punning in either the question or the answer. Archer Taylor says that "we can probably say that riddling is a universal art" and cites riddles from hundreds of different cultures including Finnish, Hungarian, American Indian, Chinese, Russian, Dutch and Filipino sources amongst many others. Many riddles and riddle-themes are internationally widespread. In the assessment of Elli Köngäs-Maranda (originally writing about Malaitian riddles, but with an insight that has been taken up more widely), whereas myths serve to encode and establish social norms, "riddles make a point of playing with conceptual boundaries and cr ... World Riddle
The term "world riddle" or "world-riddle" has been associated, for over 100 years, with Friedrich Nietzsche (who mentioned ''Welträthsel'' in several of his writings) and with the biologist- philosopher Ernst Haeckel, who, as a professor of zoology at the University of Jena, wrote the book ''Die Welträthsel'' in 1895–1899, in modern spelling ''Die Welträtsel'' (German; "The World-riddles"), with the English version published under the title ''The Riddle of the Universe'', 1901. The term "world riddle" concerns the nature of the universe and the meaning of life. The question and answer of the World Riddle has also been examined as an inspiration or allegorical meaning within some musical compositions, such as the unresolved harmonic progression at the end of '' Also sprach Zarathustra'' (1896) by composer Richard Strauss. View of Nietzsche Friedrich Nietzsche referred to the "World Riddle" (''Welträthsel'') in several of his writings; however, his direct influenc ... The Riddle Song
"The Riddle Song", also known as "I Gave My Love a Cherry", is an English folk song, a lullaby carried over by settlers to the American Appalachians. History "The Riddle Song" descends from a 15th-century English song in which a maiden says she is advised to unite with her lover. It is related to Child Ballad no. 1, or "Riddles Wisely Expounded" and Child Ballad no. 46, " Captain Wedderburn's Courtship" It is no. 330 in the Roud Folk Song Index. Burl Ives recorded it on 11 February 1941 for his first album, '' Okeh Presents the Wayfaring Stranger''. Since then, it has been recorded by many artists, including Josh White, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Doc Watson, Sam Cooke, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Shelby Flint, The Meters, Skid Roper and Carly Simon. The song's "cherry that has no stone" goes back to the 15th-century version's "the cherye with-outyn ony ston." Some have seen it as a reference to the hymen, and some have even tried to reconstruct an original bawdy version from which ... Riddle (tool)
A riddle is a large sieve used to separate soil or compost particles, or for separating soil from vegetables. Etymology English "riddle" is from Middle English ''ridelle'' "coarse sieve," from late Old English ''hriddel'' "sieve," altered by dissimilation from Old English ''hridder'' "sieve" Description A riddle may be square, rectangular or circular in shape, with a rim made from wood, metal, plastic or beechwood, holding in place a steel wire mesh that may either be handwoven or machine-made. A typical circular riddle is approximately in diameter and the mesh may have a spacing of something like , , , , or . A riddle is typically used to improve soil quality by allowing the gardener to sieve through soil and remove stones, twigs, large lumps of clay etc. and hence provide a finer tilth. The Riddle (You And I)
"The Riddle" is a song by American singer Five for Fighting. It was released on May 15, 2006 as the lead single from his third album '' Two Lights''. The song peaked at number 40 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart during an 18-week chart stay, making it Five for Fighting's third and, to date, last top-40 hit in the United States. On the ''Billboard'' Adult Contemporary chart, the single reached number four. Background and content John Ondrasik has stated that it was the hardest to write of any of his songs, taking 18 months to write. By the end, he had over 100 drafts before he came up with the final version. Although it began as a song on the meaning of life, it later evolved into a song about the love between a father and his son, inspired by his relationship with his own five-year-old. Critical reception Chuck Taylor of ''Billboard'' magazine gave the song a mixed review, calling it "refreshingly more uptempo and optimistic than previous 'Superman' and '100 Years,' albeit sti ... Riddle (song)
"Riddle" is a song recorded by American R&B group En Vogue. It was written by Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy, along with band members Cindy Herron, Maxine Jones, and Terry Ellis, for their fourth studio album '' Masterpiece Theater'' (2000), while production was helmed by Foster & McElroy. An angry mid-tempo song about a sneaking, cheating lover, "Riddle" is built around a clapping game motif, and interpolates the band's 1992 song "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)." Lyrically, it has the protagonist revealing her feelings about discovering that her love interest is having an affair with someone else over the course of the week. En Vogue performed "Riddle" on several shows, including ''The Rosie O'Donnell Show'' and ''The Tonight Show with Jay Leno''. "Riddle" was the last single to feature Maxine Jones before she left to make more time for her family. In 2008, all four original members reunited to perform at a music award show.
