Richard Dawson, 1st Earl Of Dartrey
Richard Dawson, 1st Earl of Dartrey Order of St. Patrick, KP (7 September 1817 – 12 May 1897), styled the Hon. Richard Dawson until 1827 and the Lord Cremorne from 1827 to 1866, was an Anglo-Irish Liberal Party (UK), Liberal, and later Liberal Unionist Party, Liberal Unionist, politician. Life Dartrey was the second and only surviving son of Richard Dawson, 2nd Baron Cremorne, and his wife Anne Elizabeth Emily (née Whaley), and succeeded his father in the barony in 1827 at the age of nine. As this was an Peerage of Ireland, Irish peerage it did not entitle him to a seat in the House of Lords. Mary Fox-Strangways, Countess of Ilchester (born Hon. Mary Eleanor Anne Dawson; 6 January 1852 – 1935) was an Anglo-Irish people, Anglo-Irish noblewoman, an Anti-suffragism, anti-suffragist and a leading figure in London society. She was the wife of Henry Fox-Strangways, 5th Earl of Ilchester. Life Mary Eleanor Anne Dawson was born in 1852 in St George Hanover Square, Westminster, the fourth child and only daughter of Richard Dawson, 1st Earl of Dartrey (then Lord Cremorne) and Augusta Stanley. She married Henry Fox-Strangways, 5th Earl of Ilchester on 8 February 1872 and became the Countess of Ilchester. Vesey Dawson, 2nd Earl of Dartrey (22 April 1842 – 14 June 1920), styled Viscount Cremorne between 1866 and 1897, was an Irish Liberal politician. Family and early life Dawson was the eldest child of Richard Dawson, 1st Earl of Dartrey (then Lord Cremorne), and his wife, Augusta Stanley, daughter of Edward Stanley and Lady Mary Maitland. He became known by the courtesy title Viscount Cremorne in July 1866 upon his father's elevation to an earldom. Educated at Eton College, he later became a captain and, later still, a lieutenant-colonel in the Coldstream Guards, retiring from the British Army in 1876. In 1882, the then Lord Cremorne married Julia Georgiana Sarah Wombwell, daughter of Sir George Orby Wombwell and Lady Julia Sarah Alice Child-Villiers. Earl of Dartrey, of Dartrey in the County of Monaghan, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in July 1866 for the 3rd Baron Cremorne. Thomas Dawson, Burgess of Armagh, came from Yorkshire to Ireland during the reign of Elizabeth I. During the 1650s and 1660s, his second son, Richard, a cornet in Cromwell's cavalry, purchased 31 townlands which formed the nucleus of the family's estates in County Monaghan. His only daughter and heiress, Frances, married her cousin Walter Dawson (died 1718) of Armagh, who built Dawson's Grove, County Monaghan. Their son, Richard Dawson (died 1766), represented County Monaghan in the Irish House of Commons, becoming a Dublin banker and Alderman. He married Elizabeth Vesey, daughter of The Most Rev.
