Retailers' Cooperatives
A retailers' cooperative is a type of cooperative which employs economies of scale on behalf of its Retailing, retailer members. Retailers' cooperatives use their purchasing power to acquire discounts from manufacturers and often share marketing expenses. A retailers' cooperative is essentially a group of independently owned businesses that pool their resources to purchase in bulk, usually by establishing a central buying organization, and engage in joint promotion efforts. It is common for locally owned supermarket, grocery stores, hardware stores, and pharmacy, pharmacies to participate in retailers' cooperatives. Both consumers' cooperative, consumers' cooperatives and Workers cooperative, workers' cooperatives should be distinguished from a retailers' cooperative. Do It Best
Do it Best Corp., formerly known as Hardware Wholesalers, Inc. (HWI), is a member-owned hardware, lumber, and building materials cooperative based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Do it Best Corp. is the second-largest co-op in the industry with over $6 billion in annual sales. Do it Best Corp. does not mandate store identities, so member-owners may or may not display the Do it Best brand name in their businesses. History HWI was founded by Arnold Gerberding in 1945 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with the investments of 100 independent business owners in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Gerberding used the co-op model so HWI members could get better volume pricing from vendors by buying together rather than on their own. Independent hardware stores became members of the cooperative and its sole shareholders as well. The first warehouse facility opened in 1948, and HWI added a private truck delivery system in 1955. Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative
Edinburgh Bicycle Co-operative is a bicycle retailer with three stores across Scotland, two stores in Northern England, and an online store selling worldwide. The co-operative is the longest-established worker co-operative in Scotland, originally founded as a bicycle repair service in Edinburgh in 1977. In recent years the co-operative has grown to be a dominant bicycle retailer in Scotland. EBC has its own Revolution self-branded products which are established outside of the Edinburgh branches. Co-op Wholesale Limited ( ; formerly Nisa Retail Limited, Nisa-Today's and Northern Independent Supermarkets Association) is a groceries wholesaler (or " symbol group") operating in the United Kingdom. The REWE Group is a German diversified retail and tourism co-operative group based in Cologne, Germany. The name REWE comes from "Revisionsverband der Westkauf-Genossenschaften", meaning "Western Buying Co-operatives Auditing Association". Edeka
The Edeka Group is the largest German supermarket corporation , holding a market share of 25.3%.
