Republica
Republica are an English alternative rock band formed in 1994. They reached the height of their popularity from 1996 to 1999. The band went on hiatus in 2001 and reunited in 2008. The Republica sound was described by the band as " technopop punk rock". The current line-up consists of Saffron (vocals), Tim Dorney (keyboards) and Johnny Male (guitar). History 1994–1997: Beginnings, debut album and international success Former Flowered Up keyboard players Tim Dorney and Andy Todd founded Republica. They recruited singer Saffron, who was an actress at one point, performing for two years in London's ''Starlight Express''. She also appeared in the video for the Chesney Hawkes' hit " The One and Only" and in the video for N-Joi's single "Mindflux". She was also lead vocalist on N-Joi's hit "Anthem" in 1990. Republica (album)
''Republica'' is the debut studio album by English band Republica. It was first released in the United States on 30 July 1996 by RCA Records, and by Deconstruction Records in the United Kingdom. Three singles were released from the album: "Bloke", " Ready to Go" and " Drop Dead Gorgeous", the last two charting strongly. Upon its release, ''Republica'' received generally positive reviews from music critics and was a commercial success. It peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart. In the US, it reached number 153 on the ''Billboard'' 200 and was also successful in other countries, such as Germany and New Zealand. Ready To Go (Republica Song)
"Ready to Go" is a song by English alternative rock band Republica, released as a single on 15 April 1996 from the band's debut album, ''Republica'' (1996). Two versions of the song, the US mix and the original mix, were included. This version was later featured on a greatest hits collection, ''Ready to Go: The Best Of''. The single originally reached number 43 on the UK Singles Chart in April 1996. Later in the year, a remix of the song began to gain popularity outside the United Kingdom, charting in Australia, Canada, and the United States. The remix was released in the United Kingdom in February 1997, when it reached a new peak of number 13. "Drop Dead Gorgeous" is a song by English alternative rock band Republica. Released in 1996 on their self-titled debut album and in 1997 as the album's third and final single from the album, it was as a commercial success, giving the group their only top 10 hit to date in the UK. The single elicited a positive critical reaction, and was also a minor hit in the US, New Zealand, and Germany. The music video, which went into rotation on MTV, was nominated for "Best Video" at the 1998 Brit Awards. Reception Critical The song was praised upon its release. Saffron (singer)
Samantha Marie Sprackling (born 3 June 1968), known professionally as Saffron, is an English singer, songwriter, actress and the lead singer of the musical group Republica. She also performs solo and appeared in London's ''Starlight Express'' onstage for two years. Early life and career Samantha Sprackling was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to an English father and Portuguese mother of part Chinese ancestry and grew up in Brixton, south London, England. When she was 18, Sprackling passed an audition for Arlene Phillips for a part in the musical ''Starlight Express''. Saffron was the vocalist of N-Joi's 1990 top hit song ''Anthem''. She appeared in the music video for the Chesney Hawkes 1991 hit, " The One and Only", and as a dancer in the music video for N-Joi's single " Mindflux". David Barbarossa
David Barbarossa (born 1961, also known as Dave Barbe) is an English musician and author. As the drummer in both Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow, he was instrumental in creating the highly influential and innovative tribal drumming style that was popular among British and some American bands from 1979 to 1983. Adam and the Ants Barbarossa joined Adam and the Ants in 1977 and was the drummer for their debut album ''Dirk Wears White Sox''. It was released on 30 October 1979 by Do It Records and was the first number one album on the UK Indie Chart when the chart debuted in ''Record Week'' in 1980. Shortly afterward, Adam Ant hired former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren in the hope of gaining more widespread recognition. The Shamen
The Shamen ( ) were a Scottish psychedelic band, formed in 1985 in Aberdeen, who became a chart-topping electronic dance music act on the UK Singles Chart by the early 1990s. The founding members were Colin Angus, Derek McKenzie and Keith McKenzie. Peter Stephenson joined shortly after to take over on keyboards from Angus. Several other people were later in the band. Angus then teamed up with Will Sinnott, and together they found credibility as pioneers of rock/dance crossover. Flowered Up
Flowered Up were an English indie pop-alternative dance band, formed in Camden Town, London, in 1989, active during the baggy movement. Their 13-minute single " Weekender" reached the UK top 20. The band split up in 1994 amid drug problems. Following a failed reformation attempt in 2007 and a solo record deal that fell through, frontman Liam Maher died from a heroin overdose in 2009, followed by his brother Joe from complications of long-term ill-health, in 2012. N-Joi are an English production duo from Southend-on-Sea, Essex, England, consisting of Nigel Champion and Mark Franklin, (who met at Alleyn Court Prep School) with vocalist/ front person Saffron. Champion went to Framlingham College and Franklin to Felsted School but met up again after school in 1987. Biography Between 1991 and 1996, they entered the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot Dance Club Play chart five times, all of them hitting the top 10. Deconstruction Records is a British record label founded in 1987 by Pete Hadfield and Keith Blackhurst, together with Mike Pickering of M People. According to '' DJ Magazine'' it is "best remembered for marrying underground credibility and diversity with an open-minded attitude towards pop". "The One and Only" is a song by the English singer and actor Chesney Hawkes. Written by Nik Kershaw, the single was released by Chrysalis Records in January 1991 as Hawkes' debut single. Produced by Kershaw and Alan Shacklock, and recorded and mixed by Gareth Cousins, the song was featured in the comedy-drama film '' Buddy's Song'' (1991), which starred Hawkes as the eponymous Buddy and Roger Daltrey as his father.
