RMS Saxonia (1954)
RMS ''Saxonia'' was a British passenger liner built by John Brown & Company at Clydebank, Scotland for the Cunard Steamship Company for their Liverpool-Montreal service. She was the first of four almost identical sister ships built by Browns between 1954 and 1957 for UK-Montreal service. The other three were the ''Ivernia'' (1955), ''Carinthia'' (1956) and ''Sylvania'' (1957) The ''Saxonia'' and ''Ivernia'' were extensively rebuilt in 1962-63 as dual purpose liner/cruise ships. They were renamed ''Carmania'' and ''Franconia'' respectively and painted in the same green cruising livery as the older ''Caronia''. ''Carmania'' continued transatlantic crossings and cruises until September 1967 when she closed out Cunard's Montreal service. She and ''Franconia'', had been painted white at the end of 1966 and from 1968 ''Carmania'' sailed as a full time cruise ship until withdrawal after arriving at Southampton on 31 October 1971. The Cunard Line ( ) is a British shipping and an international cruise line based at Carnival House at Southampton, England, operated by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation & plc. Since 2011, Cunard and its four ships have been registered in Hamilton, Bermuda. In 1839, Samuel Cunard was awarded the first British transatlantic steamship mail contract, and the next year formed the British and North American Royal Mail Steam-Packet Company in Glasgow with shipowner Sir George Burns together with Robert Napier, the famous Scottish steamship engine designer and builder, to operate the line's four pioneer paddle steamers on the Liverpool–Halifax–Boston route. RMS Ivernia
was a , built in 1955 by John Brown & Company at Clydebank, Scotland for Cunard Line, for their transatlantic passenger service between the UK and Canada. In 1963 she was rebuilt as a cruise ship and renamed RMS ''Franconia'', after the famous pre-war liner . She continued to sail for Cunard until being withdrawn from service and laid up in 1971. In 1973 she was sold to the Soviet Union's Far Eastern Shipping Company and, renamed SS ''Fedor Shalyapin'', cruised around Australia and the far East. In 1980 she was transferred to the Black Sea Shipping Company fleet, and for a time returned to cruising in the Mediterranean and around Europe. In 1989 she was transferred again, to the Odessa Cruise Company, and continued her career as a cruise ship until 1994. She was then laid up at Illichivsk, a Black Sea port southwest of Odesa, until 2004 when, as the ''Salona'', she sailed to Alang, India, where she was Ship breaking, scrapped. RMS Saxonia (1899)
The first RMS ''Saxonia'' was a passenger ship of the British Cunard Line. Between 1900 and 1925, ''Saxonia'' operated on North Atlantic and Mediterranean passenger routes, and she saw military service during World War I (1914–1918). ''Saxonia''s sister ship was ''SS Ivernia, Ivernia''. Design Around 1900, the Cunard Line faced tight competition from the British White Star Line and the German lines Norddeutscher Lloyd and Hamburg America (HAPAG). Cunards largest liners, as of 1898 and , had a reputation for size and speed, both being of 12,950 gross register tons (grt) and having held the Blue Riband for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. However, Norddeutscher Lloyds new liner had taken the Blue Riband from them in 1897, while White Star was planning to place a new 17,000-grt liner, RMS Oceanic (1899), RMS ''Oceanic'' into service.
