Queen's Tower (London)
The Queen's Tower is a tower topped with a copper-covered dome. It is situated in the South Kensington Campus of Imperial College London, England, just north of the Imperial College Road. To reach the base of the dome from the ground on foot, one must ascend a series of narrow spiral staircases with 325 steps in total. The tower used to be the central tower of the Imperial Institute, and is now the sole remaining part of that building. History The Imperial Institute was founded on Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, and its partial demolition began in 1957. At that time it was generally known as the Collcutt Tower, after its designer, the Victorian architect Thomas Edward Collcutt. The tower itself would have been demolished along with the rest of the Institute, had it not been for a public campaign led by the then Poet Laureate John Betjeman, a supporter of 19th-century architecture. He warned that tastes in architecture change, and that the destruction of this buildi ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Queen's Tower (Serpieri)
Queen's Tower (, ''Pyrgos Vasilissis'') is a former royal estate near Athens, Greece. The estate, consisting of 200 hectares (494 acres), was purchased by King Otto, the first king of modern Greece. He built there a small neogothic castle for his wife, Queen Amalia. The architecture resembles Hohenschwangau castle in Bavaria, built for Maximilian II of Bavaria, the brother of King Otto. As the castle is only one tower, it is called the Queen's Tower. After the abdication of King Otto, the estate was sold to the Serpieri family, who still own it. They have a dairy farm and wineyard on the estate. The wines bottled on the estate are called "Tour la Reine" (French for Queen's Tower). A nearby station of the Proastiakos The Proastiakos (; "suburban") is Greece's commuter rail service, run by Hellenic Train, on rail infrastructure owned by the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE) (lines) and GAIAOSE (buildings and Trains). Queen's Tower (Neduntheevu)
The Queen's Tower (), also known as Quindah Tower; ) is a tower that was built by the British during their rule in Sri Lanka. They built it as a trigonometric point and a light navigation point for diurnally operated ships. It is located on the southeastern coast of Neduntheevu, also known as Delft Island. It was used by the British as a tower to measure the land by setting up an instrument on the top of the tower. However, an incorrect theory suggests that this tower had been used as a lighthouse. According to it, a fire was lit at the bottom which created a vacuum, forcing air upwards. Its light was passed through the tower's chimney A chimney is an architectural ventilation structure made of masonry, clay or metal that isolates hot toxic exhaust gases or smoke produced by a boiler, stove, furnace, incinerator, or fireplace from human living areas.
