Pakistan is a multilingual country with dozens of languages spoken as first languages. The majority of Pakistan's languages belong to the Indo-Iranian group of the Indo-European language family. Urdu is the national language and the lingua franca of Pakistan, and while sharing official status with English, it is the preferred and dominant language used for inter-communication between different ethnic groups. Numerous regional languages are spoken as first languages by Pakistan's various ethnolinguistic groups. Languages with more than a million speakers each include Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Saraiki, Urdu, Balochi, Hindko, Pahari-Pothwari and Brahui. Balochi or Baluchi () is an Iranian language spoken primarily in the Balochistan region of Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. In addition, there are speakers in Oman, the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, Turkmenistan, East Africa and in diaspora communities in other parts of the world. The total number of speakers, according to '' Ethnologue'', is 8.75 million. Of these, 6.28 million are in Pakistan. According to Brian Spooner, Balochi belongs to the Western Iranian subgroup, and its original homeland is suggested to be around the central Caspian region. Bagri Language
The Bagri language (باگڑی/बागड़ी) is a language that forms a Dialect continuum, dialect bridge between Haryanvi language, Haryanvi, Rajasthani language, Rajasthani, and Punjabi language, Punjabi and takes its name from the Bagar tract region of Northwestern India. The speakers are mostly in India, with pockets in the Bahawalpur District, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar District, Bahawalnagar districts of Punjab, Pakistan, Punjab in Pakistan. Bagri is a typical Indo-Aryan language akin to Haryanvi, Punjabi language, Punjabi and Rajasthani languages, Rajasthani with Subject–object–verb, SOV word order. Badeshi Language
Badeshi is an unclassified Indo-Iranian language spoken in Pakistan. The language is critically endangered and considered at risk of extinction. In 2018 the BBC found three men who could still speak the language. Muhammad Zaman Sagar, a field linguist connected to the Forum for Language Initiative, has worked on this language. But as a result of his research during two years, he collected only about one hundred words. In July 2007, he visited the Bishigram Valley again and spent some days with the people there. There are efforts to retain a record of the language by linguist Zubair Torwali among others. In 2018, BBC reporters found three old men (Said Gul, Ali Sher and Rahim Gul) who could still speak Badeshi in the Bishigram Valley in Northern Pakistan. Aer Language
Aer is an Indo-Aryan language spoken by around 150 people in Sindh, Pakistan and Gujarat, India. It is one of the smallest languages of Pakistan in terms of number of speakers, and is spoken in rural areas of Sindh including Hyderabad, Kot Ghulam Muhammad, and Kunri. Some speakers are also reported to be living in Shaheed Benazirabad, but they have a different culture. History After the Partition of India in 1947, the Muslim speakers of the language migrated to Pakistan, while the Hindu speakers stayed in India. Most of the Aer speakers in Pakistan live in Deh 333, near Hyderabad in lower Sindh. The language was formed in the Indian subcontinent during the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire due to the influence of Persian, Arabic, and Turkish on Indian languages. 2022 Census Of Pakistan
The 2023 Census of Pakistan will be a detailed enumeration of the Pakistani population that will be the seventh national census in the country. It is currently scheduled to be held from 1 Feb 2023 to 4 Mar 2023 and will be conducted by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
