Pontllanfraith () is a large village and Community (Wales), community located in the Sirhowy Valley in Caerphilly County Borough, Wales, within the Historic counties of Wales, historic boundaries of Monmouthshire (historic), Monmouthshire. It is situated adjacent to the town of Blackwood, Wales, Blackwood, with the Sirhowy River passing through both locations. The village includes the communities of the Penllwyn, Springfield and The Bryn. The population of the community at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 census was 8,552. Etymology The name of the village is a combination of ' "bridge" + ' "lake" + ' "speckled", "the bridge of the speckled lake". Although a Grammatical gender, masculine noun in Modern Welsh, ' "lake" was feminine in the medieval language of the south, hence the Consonant mutation#Welsh, mutated feminine form ', rather than unmutated masculine ' as would be found today.
