Gaius Pontius
Gaius Pontius (fl. 321 BC), sometimes called Gavius Pontius, was a Samnite commander (clan Varry/Varriani) during the Second Samnite War. He is most well known for his victory over the Roman legions at the Battle of the Caudine Forks in 321 BC. He was eventually captured and executed by Fabius Rullianus. Early command Gaius Pontius was a Meddix, a Samnite position similar to a Roman Consul or Magistratus at the beginning of the Second Samnite War. He controlled a force of nearly 9,000, including nearly 1,000 cavalrymen. With this force, he won a series of early victories, which included taking the towns of Canusium and Gnaitha, and defeating the army under the command of Cornelius Lentulus. The Samnites failed to take advantage of these victories, however, and the Romans continued to press into Samnite territory. Battle of the Caudine Forks In 321 BC, the Romans were moving into Samnium, and Pontius, who was encamped at Caudium, discovered that the army led by the Roman C ...

Pontius Aquila
Pontius Aquila (possibly Lucius Pontius; died 21 April 43 BC) was a Roman politician, military commander, and one of the assassins of Julius Caesar. In 45 BC, as tribune of the plebs, he annoyed Caesar by refusing to stand during his triumphal procession, and, in the following year, joined in the conspiracy to kill the dictator. Aquila died fighting at the Battle of Mutina against Marc Antony in April 43 BC, before the formation of the Second Triumvirate later that year. Life Pontius Aquila probably belonged to an undistinguished family from Sutrium in southern Etruria. He seems to have been a committed republican and opponent of Julius Caesar from the start, and probably supported Caesar's enemy Pompey in the civil war which began in 49 BC. In 45 BC, during Caesar's dictatorship, he was tribune of the plebs, and, at Caesar's triumph in October, Aquila did not, unlike the other tribunes, stand up in honor as the procession passed by. This irritated Caesar so much, he cried out, ...

Pontius Pilate
Pontius Pilate (; grc-gre, Πόντιος Πιλᾶτος, ) was the fifth governor of the Roman province of Judaea, serving under Emperor Tiberius from 26/27 to 36/37 AD. He is best known for being the official who presided over the trial of Jesus and ultimately ordered his crucifixion. Pilate's importance in modern Christianity is underscored by his prominent place in both the Apostles' and Nicene Creeds. Due to the Gospels' portrayal of Pilate as reluctant to execute Jesus, the Ethiopian Church believes that Pilate became a Christian and venerates him as both a martyr and a saint, a belief which is historically shared by the Coptic Church. Although Pilate is the best-attested governor of Judaea, few sources regarding his rule have survived. Nothing is known about his life before he became governor of Judaea, and nothing is known about the circumstances that led to his appointment to the governorship. Coins that he minted have survived from Pilate's governorship, as well ...

Pontius Telesinus
Pontius Telesinus (died 2 November 82 BC) was the last independent leader of the Italic Samnites before their annexation by the Roman Republic. A fierce patriot, he was one of the rebel commanders in the Marsic War, Social War (91–87 BC) against Rome, leading the last remnants of the rebellion in southern Italy after the main uprising had already been suppressed. He intervened in the Roman civil wars of the 80s BC in an attempt to improve his and his people's position, but picked the losing side and was killed in 82 BC following the Battle of the Colline Gate (82 BC), Battle of the Colline Gate against the Roman general Sulla. Pontius Telesinus may be an ancestor of Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judaea who oversaw the crucifixion of Jesus. Life The Samnites were a people who inhabited central and southern Italy, and had fought Samnite Wars, several wars against the Roman Republic before being subjugated in the third century BC. Pontia gens, Pontius Telesinus claimed desc ...

Marcus Pontius Laelianus
Marcus Pontius Laelianus Larcius Sabinus was a Roman senator and general who held a series of offices in the emperor's service. He was suffect consul for the ''nundinium'' of July-August 145 as the colleague of Quintus Mustius Priscus. Laelianus is primarily known through inscriptions. Origins and family According to Anthony Birley, the origin of Laelianus is indicated by his tribe, ''Pupina'', whose members are found only in Italy "with the single exception of Baeterrae in Narbonensis, where he served twice." Birley suggests that his origins lie in Gallia Narbonensis, although an Italian origin "is slightly more likely." In his monograph on Roman naming practices of the period, Olli Salomies writes that Laelianus is "probably" a son of the Pontius Laelianus mentioned in the ''Testamentum Dasumii''.Salomies, ''Adoptive and Polyonymous Nomenclature in the Roman Empire'' (Helsinki: Societas Scientiarum Fennica, 1992), p. 142 Other members of his family include: a son, Marcu ...

Pontius Of Carthage
Pontius, or Pontius the Deacon, (died in the mid third century) was a Christian saint and Latin author from Carthage. He served as a deacon under Cyprian of Carthage (c. 200 –258) and wrote the ''Vita Cypriani'' ("Life of Cyprian") shortly after Cyprian's death. Life There is only one surviving account of Pontius, a brief mention in Jerome's ''De viris illustribus'' ("On famous men") 68: Although the author is not identified in the transmitted ''Life of Cyprian'', Jerome is clearly writing of this work. The only other information comes from the author's own statements: he writes in part from what he himself witnessed or heard from older people; he accompanied Cyprian into exile at Curubis, modern Korba. From the preface, it appears that Pontius was not aware of any other account of Cyprian's martyrdom at the time he wrote. Beyond this little is certain. Allusions and forensic style indicate that Pontius must have been well educated, with knowledge both of the Bible and o ...
