Wyoming
Wyoming () is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. It is bordered by Montana to the north and northwest, South Dakota and Nebraska to the east, Idaho to the west, Utah to the southwest, and Colorado to the south. With a population of 576,851 in the 2020 United States census, Wyoming is the least populous state despite being the 10th largest by area, with the second-lowest population density after Alaska. The state capital and most populous city is Cheyenne, which had an estimated population of 63,957 in 2018. Wyoming's western half is covered mostly by the ranges and rangelands of the Rocky Mountains, while the eastern half of the state is high-elevation prairie called the High Plains. John Milton Thayer
John Milton Thayer (January 24, 1820March 19, 1906) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and a postbellum United States Senator from Nebraska. Thayer served as Governor of Wyoming Territory and Governor of Nebraska. Thayer was born in Bellingham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He attended and taught in rural schools. He graduated from Brown University in 1841, and established a practice in Worcester, Massachusetts. Thayer was the editor of the Worcester Magazine and the Historical Journal. Thayer served as a lieutenant in the local militia company before deciding to move with his family to the West. He was married to Mary Torrey Allen on December 27, 1842, and they had six children. Thomas Moonlight (September 30, 1833February 7, 1899) was a United States politician and soldier. Moonlight served as Governor of Wyoming Territory from 1887 to 1889. Birth Moonlight was born in Forfarshire, Scotland. He was baptized on 30 September 1833 in St Vigeans, Angus, Scotland with birth record number 319/0040 0169. His family can be traced in Scotland back to the 1600s, and to Archibald Moonlight and his wife Margaret Elspet Andersone. Moonlight was one of 10 children. Moonlight's birth date is frequently quoted as 10 November 1833 (including on his grave marker), but his baptism records exist for 30 September 1833. William Hale (November 18, 1837 – January 13, 1885) was an American politician from Iowa. Hale served as Governor of Wyoming Territory from 1882 until his death in 1885. Early years Hale was born in New London, a community in Henry County, Iowa. Hale attended public school. He was admitted to the bar association when he was twenty-one years old, and began to practice law. Political life In 1868, Hale became a member of the Republican Party and was a presidential elector from Iowa in that year's election. He served in the Iowa House of Representatives from 1863 to 1866. Several years later, on July 18, 1882, U.S. President Chester A. Arthur appointed Hale Governor of Wyoming Territory. Morton Everel Post (December 25, 1840March 19, 1933) was an American businessman, farmer, and politician who served as a delegate to the United States House of Representatives from Wyoming Territory's at-large congressional district. Early life Morton Everel Post was born on December 25, 1840, in Henrietta, New York, to Morton A. Post and Alary Wickware. He attended schools in Medina, New York. Stephen Wheeler Downey (July 25, 1839 – August 3, 1902) was a lawyer and politician in Wyoming. A Union Army veteran of the American Civil War, he was an early white settler of Wyoming, and served as its treasurer, auditor, and delegate to Congress. After statehood, Downey continued to serve in local and state office, including Speaker of the Wyoming House of Representatives. Downey was a founder of the University of Wyoming, and the longtime president of its board of trustees.
