Peter Tait (physicist)
Peter Guthrie Tait FRSE (28 April 1831 – 4 July 1901) was a Scottish mathematical physicist and early pioneer in thermodynamics. He is best known for the mathematical physics textbook '' Treatise on Natural Philosophy'', which he co-wrote with Lord Kelvin, and his early investigations into knot theory. His work on knot theory contributed to the eventual formation of topology as a mathematical discipline. His name is known in graph theory mainly for Tait's conjecture. He is also one of the namesakes of the Tait–Kneser theorem on osculating circles. Early life Tait was born in Dalkeith on 28 April 1831 the only son of Mary Ronaldson and John Tait, secretary to the 5th Duke of Buccleuch. He was educated at Dalkeith Grammar School then Edinburgh Academy. Sir Peter Tait (5 September 1915 – 31 January 1996) was a New Zealand National Party Member of Parliament, mayor of Napier, small businessman and opponent of New Zealand's Homosexual Law Reform Act. Early life Tait was born on 5 September 1915, in Wellington's Island Bay suburb. His family were Scottish immigrants, originally from the Shetland Islands. His father Jack and his uncles Peter and Ross belonged to the best known Shetland fishing families in Island Bay. Through his early life, Tait suffered from tuberculosis, which meant that he was unable to play an active role in New Zealand's Second World War effort, nor could he become a Baptist minister. He moved from Waipukurau, a rural community, to the East Coast of the North Island, and ultimately settled in Napier. Peter Richard Tait (15 March 1950 – 20 September 2002) was an English radio presenter. Early career Peter was born in Croydon, Surrey, England. After leaving school, he started a career in insurance, however he soon turned professional as a DJ with residencies in Leicester, Southend-On-Sea, Richmond, Brighton, East Grinstead and Croydon. In 1977, he got a job at U.B.N. which was a radio station for the workers of United Biscuits. After 18 months, he landed the job as afternoon show presenter at Radio Trent in Nottingham where he worked for five years. In 1983, Radio Caroline relaunched and returned to the North Sea. Peter was offered the Radio Caroline breakfast show where he was known as Peter Clark, and attracted an audience of over three million listeners, however due to the station having a lack of revenue, he left after three months. Peter Tait (born 5 March 1949) is a former Australian Paralympic shooter. He won a silver medal at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in the Mixed Sport Pistol SH1 event, competed at the FESPIC Games, World Shooting Championships, Oceania, National and State Championships. Personal Tait was born 5 March 1949 in the Victorian country town of Willaura. A builder by trade, his major sporting interest was in competitive pistol shooting. In Paralympic sport a classification system ensures that competition is fair and equal. It determines the eligibility of the athlete and how they are grouped for competition. Tait's classification SH1 (pistol) is open to athletes with both upper and / or lower limb impairment. Governed by World Shooting Para Sport, it designates Sport Class Status in accordance with Classification Rules of the International Paralympic Committee. Peter Tait (19 October 1906 – 22 April 1980) was a Scotland international rugby union player. Rugby Union career Amateur career Tait played for Royal HSFP. Provincial career Tait was capped for Edinburgh District. He was supposed to play for the Scotland Probables in the first trial match of season 1937-38.
