Pete And Penny
The Youngstown State Penguins are the athletic teams of Youngstown State University of Youngstown, Ohio. The university is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I, and the Penguins compete in football as members of the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Most other sports compete as members of the Horizon League. History Nickname YSU is the only Division I program in the country to use Penguins as its athletic nickname. YSU's mascots are Pete and Penny, two penguins dressed in scarfs and stocking caps. There are two accounts of how the "Penguins" nickname came to be. Both stories come from the same cold evening on January 30, 1933, when the men's basketball team was playing at West Liberty State. Horizon League
The Horizon League is an 11-school collegiate athletic conference in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, whose members are located in and near the Great Lakes region. The Horizon League founded in 1979 as the Midwestern City Conference. The conference changed its name to Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and then the Horizon League in 2001. The conference started with a membership of six teams and has fluctuated in size with 24 different schools as members at different times. The League currently has 11 members. Its most recent membership changes occurred on July 1, 2022 with the departure of the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) to the Missouri Valley Conference. Dwight "Dike" Beede
Dwight Vincent "Dike" Beede (January 23, 1903 – December 10, 1972) was an American football player and coach. He served as the first head football coach at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania in 1926, Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania from 1934 to 1936, and Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio from 1938 to 1972, compiling a career college football coaching record of 175–149–20. In 1941, he invented and introduced the penalty flag, now a common fixture of American football. Some sources spell his name "Dyke" Beede. Bo Pelini
Mark Anthony "Bo" Pelini (born December 13, 1967) is a former American football coach and former player. He was most recently the defensive coordinator for the Louisiana State University Tigers football team. He is the younger brother of former Florida Atlantic head coach Carl Pelini, who has frequently worked under Bo as an assistant coach. Pelini served as head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers from December 2007 until November 2014 and later served as head coach of the Youngstown State University football team from 2015 through 2019. Eric Wolford is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the offensive line coach at the University of Alabama. Wolford previously served as the offensive line coach at the University of Kentucky in 2021. He was the head football coach at Youngstown State University from 2010 to 2014. Appalachian State Mountaineers Football
The Appalachian State Mountaineers football team is the intercollegiate American football team representing Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. The Mountaineers have competed in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Sun Belt Conference since 2014. Jon Heacock (born October 11, 1960) is an American football coach and former player. He is the defensive coordinator at Iowa State University. Heacock served as the head football coach at Youngstown State University from 2001 to 2009, compiling a record of 60–44. Jim Tressel
James Patrick Tressel (born December 5, 1952) is an American college football coach and university administrator who is currently the president of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. Before becoming an administrator, Tressel was the head football coach of the Youngstown State Penguins and later the Ohio State Buckeyes in a career that spanned from 1986 until 2010. Tressel's teams earned several national championships during the course of his career, earning him numerous accolades. Tressel was born in Mentor, Ohio and attended Baldwin–Wallace College, where he played football as quarterback under his father, Lee Tressel. The Georgia Southern Eagles football program represents Georgia Southern University in football as part of the Sun Belt Conference. The current head coach is Clay Helton.
