Patrick McCarthy is an English conductor and singer. McCarthy trained as a baritone singer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the London Opera Centre, and came to public attention in 1974, during a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, conducted by André Previn at The Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. McCarthy was in the audience when Thomas Allen (now Sir Thomas), the baritone soloist, fell ill during the performance, collapsing onto his chair and needing to be carried off by members of the orchestra. McCarthy went backstage and offered his services as a professional singer who was experienced with the piece. Given that the understudy for the part – a member of the choir – was, in fact, a doctor and therefore looking after Allen, his offer was accepted and McCarthy went onstage to complete the performance. Patrick McCarthy MBE is a Northern Irish Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) politician and former member of Belfast City Council. Born and raised in the Markets area of Belfast, McCarthy was interned without trial in 1971 on suspicion of being a member of the Official IRA, before being released in 1972. First elected to the council in 2001 for Laganbank he was chosen as Lord Mayor of Belfast in 2006. McCarthy, the city's fourth nationalist mayor, was endorsed by all parties except Sinn Féin. He successfully represented the SDLP on Belfast City council until 2014. Tom McCarthy (born July 5, 1968) is an American sports broadcaster. He is the play-by-play announcer for Philadelphia Phillies television broadcasts and also calls National Football League games for Westwood One. He calls select NFL, NBA and college basketball games on CBS beginning in 2014. McCarthy previously served as the play-by-play voice of Saint Joseph's University men's and women's basketball teams. Patrick Covell Derrick McCarthy (24 October 1919 – 23 December 2007) was a Ceylon-born cricketer who played first-class cricket for Ceylon in the 1940s before moving to Australia and playing for Western Australia in the 1950s. In Ceylon Pat McCarthy attended Royal College, Colombo, where he played in the cricket team for several years. In March and April 1936 he was a member of the Royal College team that toured Australia, the first tour of Australia by an Asian cricket team at any level of cricket. He was the team's highest scorer on the tour. He captained the team to victory in the Royal-Thomian match in March 1938. Two weeks after the Royal-Thomian match, aged 18, McCarthy played for Ceylon in a one-day match against the touring Australians, scoring 24 batting at number four. Pat McCarthy (born 1950) is an Irish former Gaelic footballer who played as a midfielder for the Kerry and Kildare senior teams. A nephew of 1940s player, Phil McCarthy, Pat McCarthy was a naturally strong player with excellent hands and a good jump. He was part of the Kerry Under-21 team in the early 1970s but had to wait till the demise of the great Mick O'Connell and the failure of young midfield pretenders like DJ Crowley and John O'Keeffe before getting a proper chance on the senior squad in 1975 under Mick O'Dwyer. He soon became the obvious partner to Paudie Lynch. Many times that season he did most of the heavier lifting at midfield where his strength maintained control against opponents who played rough or fair. Patrick Richard McCarthy (born 31 May 1983) is an Irish former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. He is currently assistant manager of Premier League club Crystal Palace. Patrick James McCarthy is an Irish judge who has served as a Judge of the Court of Appeal since July 2018. He previously served as a Judge of the High Court from 2007 to 2018. McCarthy obtained a BCL degree from University College Cork and attended the King's Inns. He became a barrister in 1982 and became a senior counsel in 2000. His practice was focused on the Cork circuit. He frequently acted as prosecuting counsel for the Director of Public Prosecutions in criminal trials. He was also a member of the bars of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
