Paraguayan Polka
Paraguayan polka, also known as danza paraguaya (Paraguayan dance), is a style of music created in Paraguay in the 19th century. The Paraguayan polka is very different from the traditional polka, mainly because the Paraguayan version combines ternary and binary rhythms, whereas the European only uses binary. The juxtaposition of the mentioned rhythms gives the peculiar sound that characterizes this style. There are several variants of the Paraguayan polka such as ''polca syryry'', ''polca kyre'y'', ''polca correntina'', ''polca popo'', ''polca saraki'', ''polca galopa'', ''polca jekutu''. All of them are slightly different because of the different influences and styles adopted by the composers in the early years of the Paraguayan polka. Guaraní People
Guarani are a group of culturally-related indigenous peoples of South America. They are distinguished from the related Tupi people, Tupi by their use of the Guarani language. The traditional range of the Guarani people is in present-day Paraguay between the Paraná River and lower Paraguay River, the Misiones Province, Misiones Province of Argentina, southern Brazil once as far east as Rio de Janeiro, and parts of Uruguay and Bolivia. Although their demographic dominance of the region has been reduced by European colonization of the Americas, European colonisation and the commensurate rise of mestizos, there are contemporary Guarani populations in these areas. Emigdio Ayala Báez
Emigdio Ayala Báez (August 5, 1917 – February 24, 1993) was a Paraguayan musician. He was born in Escobar, a town of the Paraguarí Department, Paraguay. Beginnings He started his artistic career with the master Herminio Giménez, with who, around 1940, started his first artistic tour of presentation in Brazil. In 1941 the famous group of Félix Pérez Cardozo recorded his composition “Mi dicha lejana”, a beautiful guarania that became very popular. In 1947 he went on tour for Argentina with Herminio Giménez. Career In 1948 he was invited by Eladio Martínez to be part of the delegation of artists that would go to the Olympic Games in London, England, with the sponsor of Sir Eugen Millington-Drake, to compensate the absence of Paraguayan athletes. Carlos Noguera (28 October 1943 – 3 February 2015) was a Venezuelan writer and psychologist. Herminio Giménez
Herminio Giménez (February 20, 1905 – July 6, 1991) was a Paraguayan composer. Life At the early age of 11 he was already part of the Paraguarí music band and two years later he was hired to be part of the Asunción marching band. While at the marching band he made his first successful song, a polca named ''Jasy Morotí'', in 1918. He was the first person to record Paraguayan music in an album, in 1927. The continued beauty of his works throughout the years positioned Giménez as one of the greatest Latin American composers. During the Chaco War he was assigned as the Director of the Military band and once the war was over he received several awards. Due to the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner's government, Giménez went into exile in Argentina. He spent most of his time in the city of Corrientes. Florentín Giménez
Florentín Giménez (14 March 1925 – 11 March 2021) was a Paraguayan pianist and composer. Biography Giménez was born in Ybycuí, Paraguarí Department. In his teens, he learned to play the drums and became a member of the Orchestra of Popular Music, directed by Severo Rodas. In 1945, at the age of 20, he learned to play the piano and became a pianist in Ramón Reyes’ Orchestra, where he stayed until 1947, when the Paraguayan Civil War forced him to leave the country and settle in Argentina. After the war, he returned to Paraguay and formed his first orchestra, “Ritmos de América” (America’s Rhythms). In 1950, he formed the 14-member orchestra “Florentín Giménez y su típica Moderna”, which featured singers Oscar Escobar, Juan Carlos Miranda, Carlos Centurión, and Jorge Alonso. Maneco Galeano ( Puerto Pinasco, May 13, 1945 - Paraguay), was a Paraguayan musician, songwriter and journalist. Childhood and youth Son of W. Antonio Galeano and Ana Mieres, his real name was Felix, after his grandfather on his father side, and Roberto, after his grandfather, on his mother side. Mauricio Cardozo Ocampo (May 14, 1907 – May 5, 1982) was the main reference of the so-called "golden generation" of the Paraguayan popular music and a strict studious of the Paraguayan folk music. Biography He was born in Ybycuí on May 14, 1907, son of Crescencia Cardozo Caballero. He started his music education with the flute player Eloy Martín Pérez, in his home town.
