Panará People
The Panará are an Indigenous people of Mato Grosso in the Brazilian Amazon. They farm and are hunter-gatherers. Name They were formerly called the Kreen-Akrore. Other names for the Panará include Kreen Akarore, Kren Akarore, Krenhakarore, Krenhakore, Krenakore, Krenakarore or Krenacarore, and "Índios Gigantes" ("Giant Indians") – all variants of the Mẽbêngôkre name ''Krã jàkàràre'' , meaning "roundlike cuthead", a reference to their traditional hair style which identifies them. Language The Panará speak the Panará language, which is classified as a Goyaz Jê language, belonging to the Jê language family ( Macro-Jê). It is written in the Latin script. Panará Language
Panará (Panará ''panãra pẽẽ'' ), also known as Kreen Akarore (from Mẽbêngôkre ''Krã jakàràre'' �kɾʌ̃ jaˈkʌɾʌɾɛ, is a Jê language spoken by the Panará people of Mato Grosso, Brazil. It is a direct descendant of Southern Kayapó. Although classified as a Northern Jê language in earlier scholarship, Panará differs considerably from the Northern Jê languages in its morphosyntax and has been argued to be a sister language to Northern Jê rather than a member of that group. Phonology Consonants The consonantal inventory of Panará is as follows. The underlying nasals /m n ɲ ŋ/ are post-oralized to p nt ns ŋkpreceding an oral vowel or one of /w ɾ j/, as in ''intwêê'' /nweː/ ˈntɥej‘new’. Richard Mason (explorer)
Richard Maurice Ledingham Mason (28 March 19353 September 1961) was a British explorer and the last British person to have been killed by an uncontacted indigenous tribe. Biography Early life and first expedition Mason was born in St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex. He was educated at Westerleigh Preparatory School St Leonard's (school evacuated to Black Hall Avonwick Devon 1940-44) and later in 1948 Lancing College, and then read medicine at Magdalen College, Oxford. While at university he became involved with the Royal Geographical Society and made friends that would share his love of exploration. In 1958, with fellow Oxford undergraduate Robin Hanbury-Tenison, he set out on his first expedition, which involved traveling by jeep across South America at its widest point, east to west from Recife, Brazil, to Lima, Peru. Matrilineality is the tracing of kinship through the female line. It may also correlate with a social system in which each person is identified with their matriline – their mother's lineage – and which can involve the inheritance of property and/or titles. Slash And Burn
Slash-and-burn agriculture is a farming method that involves the cutting and burning of plants in a forest or woodland to create a field called a swidden. The method begins by cutting down the trees and woody plants in an area. The downed vegetation, or "slash", is then left to dry, usually right before the rainiest part of the year. Then, the biomass is burned, resulting in a nutrient-rich layer of ash which makes the soil fertile, as well as temporarily eliminating weed and pest species. After about three to five years, the plot's productivity decreases due to depletion of nutrients along with weed and pest invasion, causing the farmers to abandon the field and move to a new area. The time it takes for a swidden to recover depends on the location and can be as little as five years to more than twenty years, after which the plot can be slashed and burned again, repeating the cycle. Iriri River
The Iriri River ( pt, Rio Iriri, ; Mẽbêngôkre: ''Kororoti'', ) is a large tributary of the Xingu River in Brazil, in the state of Pará. It is long making it the 116th longest river in the world (with Krishna River, India) and the 15th longest in the Amazon basin. The headwaters are the traditional home of the Panará people. Course The river rises in the Nascentes da Serra do Cachimbo Biological Reserve, a strictly protected conservation unit established in 2005 in the Serra do Cachimbo.
