Pyynikin Kesäteatteri
Pyynikki Summer Theatre () or Pyynikki Open Air Theatre is a theatre operating in Tampere, Finland, known especially for its revolving auditorium. It is one of the largest summer theatres in Finland and has been running uninterrupted longer than any other open-air theatre in the country. History The theatre was founded in 1948 and was originally named Tampereen kesäteatteri (Tampere Summer Theatre). It started operating in Joselininniemi, on the shore of the lake Pyhäjärvi, where the performances continue to be held until today. In 1955 the name of the theatre was changed to Pyynikin kesäteatteri. The theatre increased its popularity throughout the latter half of the 1950s. The construction of the rotating auditorium, designed by the architect Reijo Ojanen and holding 800 seats, was completed in 1959. The seating area could be turned to face different sets. Under The North Star
''Under the North Star'' () is a trilogy published between 1959 and 1962 by Väinö Linna, Finnish author and former soldier who fought in the Continuation War (1941–44). The novel follows the life of a Finnish family from 1880, through the First World War, the Finnish Civil War and the Second World War, to about 1950. Through the lives of ordinary people, it describes the clash of ideals in Finland's language strife and the struggle between the Whites (nationalists) and the Reds (bolsheviks) in the movement to Independence and Civil War. Based on the work, two film adaptations directed by Edvin Laine have been made: the 1968 film ''Here, Beneath the North Star'' (based on the first and second volumes of trilogy) and its 1970 sequel ''Akseli and Elina'' (based on the third and final volume). ''Akseli and Elina'' () is a 1970 Finnish drama film directed by Edvin Laine. It was entered into the 7th Moscow International Film Festival. The film is based on the third and final volume of Väinö Linna's novel trilogy ''Under the North Star''. It's a sequel to the 1968 film ''Here, Beneath the North Star'' which was based on the two first volumes of the trilogy. The film shares only one main character, Akseli Koskela, with its prequel. After the end of the Finnish Civil War, the crofters' farm, also named Koskela, is liberated and life improves for the crofters. However, the outbreak of the Second World War brings new calamities and Akseli Koskela loses three sons: Vilho, Eero and Voitto. The shared hardships endured during the war is shown to lead to a reconciliatory atmosphere. Jiří Menzel () (23 February 1938 – 5 September 2020) was a Czech film director, theatre director, actor, and screenwriter. His films often combine a humanistic view of the world with sarcasm and provocative cinematography. Some of these films are adapted from works by Czech writers such as Bohumil Hrabal and Vladislav Vančura. Early life Menzel was born in Prague in 1938 to Josef Menzel and Božena Jindřichová. His father Josef was a journalist, translator and children's book writer. Menzel studied directing at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) in Prague. ''The Unknown Soldier'' (, ) is a Finnish war film directed by Edvin Laine that premiered in December 1955. It is based on '' The Unknown Soldier'', a novel by Väinö Linna. The story is about the Continuation War between Finland and the Soviet Union as told from the viewpoint of ordinary Finnish soldiers. The film was and remains the most successful movie ever in Finland; about 2.8 million people, or more than half the Finnish population, saw it in theaters, and in 1956, the film won five Jussi Awards, including the award for best director.
