Prince's Half-Tide Dock
Prince's Half-Tide Dock on the River Mersey, England, is a half tide dock and part of the Port of Liverpool. It is situated in the northern dock system in Vauxhall, connected to East Waterloo Dock and West Waterloo Dock to the north and Prince's Dock to the south. History The dock opened in 1810 and consisted of a lock entrance from the Mersey. This passage has since been closed off. The dock was rebuilt in 1868 by George Fosbery Lyster. In 2007, work began on a £20 million extension of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, providing a further of navigable waterway and encompassing Prince's Half-Tide Dock. A new lock, and fixed bridge, was built at the entrance to the adjoining Prince's Dock. The dock was partly filled in to reduce its depth. Vauxhall is an inner city district of Liverpool, England, north of the city centre, bounded by Kirkdale to the north and Everton to the east, with the docks and River Mersey running along the west side. Vauxhall is in the Liverpool City Council ward of Kirkdale and the edge of the Central, Liverpool ward, although previously it was a ward itself. Tynwald
Tynwald (), or more formally, the High Court of Tynwald () or Tynwald Court, is the legislature of the Isle of Man. It consists of two chambers, known as the branches of Tynwald: the directly elected House of Keys and the indirectly chosen Legislative Council. When the two chambers sit together, they become "Tynwald Court". The chambers sit jointly, on Tynwald Day at St John's for largely ceremonial purposes, and usually once a month in the Legislative Buildings in Douglas. Otherwise, the two chambers sit separately, with the House of Keys originating most legislation, and the Legislative Council acting as a revising chamber. The Pier Head (properly, George's Pier Head) is a riverside location in the city centre of Liverpool, England. It was part of the former Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2004, but revoked in 2021. As well as a collection of landmark buildings, recreational open space, and a number of memorials, the Pier Head was (and for some traffic still is) the landing site for passenger ships travelling to and from the city. George Fosbery Lyster
George Fosbery Lyster FRSE (1821–1899) succeeded John Hartley as Engineer in Chief to the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. He is usually referred to as G. F. Lyster. Life He was born on 7 September 1821 at Mount Talbot in County Roscommon in Ireland. He was the third son of Col Anthony Lyster of Lysterfield and Bushey Park (1775-1841), and his wife, Jane Fosbery, the daughter of George Fosbery of Kildimo. He was educated at King William's College on the Isle of Man. He was apprenticed as an engineer under James Meadows Rendel. He was responsible for most of the Birkenhead docks and docks at the north end of the dock estate. He also built the Herculaneum Dock, Harrington Dock and Toxteth Dock. Waterloo Dock is a dock on the River Mersey, England, and part of the Port of Liverpool. It is situated in the northern dock system in Vauxhall and connected to Princes Half Tide Dock to the south. The site of Victoria Dock is located to the north. History The dock was designed by Jesse Hartley and opened in 1834 as Waterloo Dock, named after the Battle of Waterloo. In 1843 an observatory was built here for astronomical and meteorological observations and to provide accurate time for ships' chronometers. In 1866, when the dock was redeveloped, the observatory was relocated to Bidston Hill on the Wirral Peninsula.
