The Primera División de Fútbol Profesional de El Salvador (First Division of Professional Football of El Salvador), more commonly known as La Liga Mayor or La Primera, also known as Liga Pepsi for sponsorship reasons, is the top professional association football, football league in El Salvador. It was established in 1947, and in 2011 had 10 clubs. Initially the league was run as a year-long tournament, but since 1998 there are two tournaments each year, much like in many other football leagues in the Americas. The Apertura season runs from August to December, while the Clausura season runs from February to July. Of the 56 teams to have competed in the league, C.D. Víctor Hugo Merino "El Pega" Dubón (born 18 August 1979) is a Salvadoran former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. Club career FC Jazz Merino signed his first professional contract at the age of 17 with Finnish team FC Jazz Pori. In Finland he is known by his maternal family name ''Dubón''. Initially, the contract was for five years, but Merino struggled to accommodate himself with the change in climate and the Finnish language. As a result, he returned after four seasons. Merino spent his first year in Finland with FC Jazz's junior team. The next season, he debuted in the Finnish top level, Veikkausliiga. Alexander Obregón
Alexander Obregón Gamboa (11 December 1977 – 30 May 2009) was a Colombian footballer who played the majority of his career in El Salvador. Club career Obregón arrived in El Salvador in 2001 and joined Salvadoran second division side Telecom. He joined San Salvador F.C. the next season, helping them win the 2003 Clausura title. He later played for Luis Ángel Firpo, Chalatenango and FAS, playing his final season of top division football with Independiente Nacional in 2007 after they were relegated. He played for the newly formed Santa Tecla team and finally joined former coach Rubén Alonso at Alba Acajutla. Death Obregón was involved in a fatal car crash in 2009, on the road to and just outside La Libertad. Former teammate and friend, Colombian player Christian Gil suffered severe injuries to the skull and thorax in the same accident.

Emiliano José Pedrozo Cantarero (born July 6, 1972, in Argentina) is a former Argentine-born Salvadoran professional football player and currently manager. Club career Born in Argentina, Pedrozo joined his fellow countrymen Dionel Bordón and Marcelo Bauza at Salvadoran side FAS in 1994. He would live to play in El Salvador for the remainder of his career, playing for several First and Second Division sides.
