President's House (Southern Arkansas University)
The President's House is a historic building on the campus of Southern Arkansas University (SAU) in Magnolia, Arkansas. The single-story brick structure was designed in the Mid-Century Modern style by Wittenberg, Delony & Davidson, and built in 1958. The architectural style is a departure from the rest of the firm's work for SAU, which is predominantly Colonial Revival in character. The house is set north and east of the university's athletic fields, away from the main campus buildings. Its construction was begun under the tenure of Dr. Dolph Camp. It was used as the official residence of the university president until the summer of 2001, and has since 2003 housed the SAU Foundation. Magnolia, Arkansas
Magnolia is a city in Columbia County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 11,577. The city is the county seat of Columbia County. Magnolia is home to the World's Largest Charcoal Grill and the World Championship Steak Cookoff, part of the Magnolia Blossom Festival. The city is also home to Southern Arkansas University. History The city was founded in 1853. At the time of its incorporation in 1858, the city had a population of about 1,950. On November 11, 1919 Jordan Jameson was lynched in the town square of Magnolia. A large white mob seized Jameson after he allegedly shot the local sheriff. They tied him to a stake and burned him alive. The city grew slowly as an agricultural and regional cotton market until the discovery of oil just east of the city in March 1938, with the Barnett #1 drilled by the Kerr-Lynn Company. Wittenberg, Delony & Davidson is an American architectural firm. It was founded in 1919 in Little Rock, Arkansas as Wittenberg & Delony by architects George H. Wittenberg and Lawson L. Delony. Wittenberg's son, Gordon G. Wittenberg, assumed control of the firm in 1959 and under the leadership of him and his successor, Thomas A. Gray, the firm was well known for its high standards of design. The firm has since moved to North Little Rock, Arkansas, North Little Rock and is active under the name WDD Architects. Mid-century modern (MCM) is a movement in interior design, product design, graphic design, architecture and urban development that was present in all the world, but more popular in North America, Brazil and Europe from roughly 1945 to 1970 during the United States's post-World War II period. MCM-style decor and architecture have seen a major resurgence that began in the late 1990s and continues today. Southern Arkansas University (SAU) is a public university in Magnolia, Arkansas, United States. The university had an enrollment of 5,100 undergraduate and graduate students as of fall 2023. History Southern Arkansas University was established by an Act of the Arkansas Legislature in 1909 as a district agricultural high school for southwest Arkansas: Third District Agricultural School, often called by students and faculty "TDAS." Its first term began in January 1911, with its curriculum including only subjects at the secondary school level. In 1925, the State Legislature authorized the school to add two years of college work and to change its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College, Third District (Magnolia A&M).
