President's House (Bucknell University)
The President's House is a building in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, United States. It was built in 1855 by Reverend Justin R. Loomis, Professor of Natural Sciences at the University at Lewisburg (now Bucknell University) and the school's president. The home, which stands at the corner of University Avenue and Loomis Street, was purchased by the school in 1878. Its first occupant from that point was David J. Hill, who became the school's president in 1879. In 1888, two years after the school was renamed Bucknell University, the trustees considered constructing a new President's House, but instead decided to remodel the extant structure. Lewisburg is a borough in Union County, Pennsylvania, United States, south by southeast of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Williamsport and north of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. University Avenue (Lewisburg, Pennsylvania)
University Avenue is a downtown street in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, United States. It runs for around , from St. George Street in the north to Loomis Street in the south. It was the original main access road to the University at Lewisburg (Bucknell University today), located on the northern side of the campus, and still leads to its former main entrance, punctuated by the 1905 Memorial Gateway. The Grove, a wooded area, stands inside the gates. The university's oldest residence hall, Old Main (today known as Daniel C. Roberts Hall), stands atop College Hill, which begins its rise inside Memorial Gateway. It was built in 1858, when the school was known as the University at Lewisburg, and was rebuilt after fire in the 1930s. Justin Rolph Loomis
Justin Rolph Loomis (August 21, 1810 – June 22, 1898) was the fourth president of Bucknell University from 1858 to 1879. Loomis was married three times. He constructed and lived in a three-story home on South Third Street in Lewisburg, still standing today. He was also instrumental in the construction of President's House, on the Bucknell campus, and the Baptist Church on South Third Street in Lewisburg. David Jayne Hill
Rev. David Jayne Hill (June 10, 1850 – March 2, 1932) was an American academic, diplomat and author. He was president of Bucknell University and the University of Rochester. Early life The son of Baptist minister David T. Hill, David Jayne Hill was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, on June 10, 1850. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1874 and was professor of rhetoric there from 1877 to 1879. In 1878 he received his Master of Arts degree, and he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa society. He also undertook graduate studies at the University of Berlin and the University of Paris. Career In 1879, Hill received his ordination and was appointed Bucknell's president, becoming the first occupant of the school's President's House. William Bucknell
William Robert Bucknell (April 1, 1811 – March 5, 1890) was an American real estate investor, businessman, philanthropist, and benefactor to Bucknell University, for whom the university is named. Early life and education Bucknell was born in Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania, to English immigrants. His father was a Lincolnshire farmer, carpenter, and early settler of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He had intermittent schooling and was trained as a wood carver. Career Bucknell began his career as a wood carver, acquired some savings from that trade and set himself up in business. After his first marriage, Bucknell began conducting real estate transactions with the purchase of suburban lands and the erection of buildings.
