Pre-Libertadores Tournament
Pre-Libertadores tournament was an association football competition and the qualification method between two clubs from Venezuela and two clubs from Mexico to determine two clubs qualified for the Copa Libertadores, it was held from 1998 to 2002. The tournament consisted of two rounds, the first preliminary round known as Selectivo Pre Pre-Libertadores played between Mexican clubs interested in participating, and the final round known as Liguilla Pre-Libertadores played between two Venezuelan clubs and the best two Mexican clubs from the first round. History The tournament was an initiative of Mexican promoters, close to the FMF and the Televisa company, who sought to get Mexican teams into CONMEBOL continental club competition. The 1998-I Pre-Libertadores tournament was the first edition of the Pre-Libertadores tournament, the annual qualifying tournament between teams from Venezuela and Mexico, that defined two teams qualified to the next Copa Libertadores. It was held from 4 to 26 February 1998. The tournament was contested by two teams from Venezuela, Caracas and Atlético Zulia, and two teams from Mexico, América and Guadalajara. The top two teams qualified to the 1998 Copa Libertadores where they joined Brazilian clubs Grêmio and Vasco da Gama in the Group 2 of the competition.
