Potash And Perlmutter (play)
''Potash and Perlmutter'' is a three-act play written by Montague Glass and Charles Klein, based on earlier short stories written by Glass. Producer Albert H. Woods staged it on Broadway, where it opened at the George M. Cohan Theatre on August 16, 1913. The play is a comedy featuring the characters Abe Potash and Mawruss Perlmutter, who are business partners in the garment industry. The play was a hit and ran for 441 performances on Broadway. A production on London's West End opened on April 14, 1914, at the Queen's Theatre starring Augustus Yorke and Robert Leonard. By the fall of 1914, Woods had eight road companies presenting the show on tour. The play was adapted as a 1923 movie, also called ''Potash and Perlmutter''. Montague Glass
Montague Marsden Glass (July 23, 1877 – February 3, 1934) was a British-American Jewish lawyer and writer of short stories, plays and film scripts. His greatest success came with the creation of his fictional duo Abe Potash and Morris ("Mawrus") Perlmutter, who appeared in three books, a play, and several films. Life Glass was born in Manchester, England, but spent his childhood in Baguley, in Cheshire. Glass's father worked in the linen and cotton trade. The Glass family moved to New York in 1890, in pursuit of Glass' father's business interests. Glass married Mary Caroline Patterson in 1908. He attended The College of the City of New York, and New York University Law School. After qualifying for the bar, Glass practiced law for several years while writing semi-professionally on the side. Barney Bernard
Barney Bernard (August 18, 1877–March 21, 1924) was an American stage and screen actor. Bernard always looked older than he was which allowed him to play aging ethnic Jewish characters. He established an onstage partnership with Alexander Carr and the two starred in the successful play ''Potash and Perlmutter'' beginning in 1913. Prior to the 'Potash' success, Bernard was in the first Ziegfeld Follie revue, ''Ziegfeld Follies of 1908'' and had also appeared in a few stage musicals with Al Jolson, ''La Belle Paree'' (1911) with Kitty Gordon, '' Vera Violetta'' (1911) with Gaby Deslys, ''The Whirl of Society'' (1912) with Jose Collins. Elita Proctor Otis (1851 or 1860 – August 10, 1927) was an American actress. She had a long distinguished stage career before her foray into early silent films. In 1909 she may have been the first actress to play Nancy Sikes on screen in a Vitagraph produced version of ''Oliver Twist''. Early years and career She was born around 1860 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, William Henry Otis, was a banker. Redfield Proctor, who was a senator from Vermont, was her great-uncle. Otis's stage debut came with the Kemble Dramatic Society. Louise Dresser (born Louise Josephine Kerlin; October 5, 1878 – April 24, 1965) was an American actress. Joseph Kilgour
Joseph Kilgour (11 July 1863 – 21 April 1933) was a Canadian actor of the silent film era. He was a well-known veteran stage actor in Broadway theatre before entering silent films. He appeared in more than 50 films between 1909 and 1926. Kilgour was born in Ayr, Canada West to Joseph Kilgour Sr. and Mary Anderson, who married 29 September 1856. Kilgour was one of seven children of the general store owner. Kilgour left Ayr and moved to the United States to pursue his acting career. Kilgour retired from acting and died in Long Island, New York in 1933.
