''Portrait of a Man'' is an oil painting by Titian, made about 1515, now in the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Identity of the sitter It may have been the painting seen by Carlo Ridolfi in Nicolas Régnier's house around 1648. It has traditionally been known as ''Portrait of Ariosto'' due to its similarity to ''A Man with a Quilted Sleeve'', another Titian work previously thought to depict Ariosto, and to a print of Ariosto in the 1532 edition of ''Orlando Furioso''. Provenance Its status as an autograph work by the artist is supported by Bernard Berenson. Auctioned at Sotheby's in London on 29 January 1929, it passed to the Booth Tarkington collection in Indianapolis. Carlo Ridolfi
Carlo Ridolfi (1594–1658) was an Italian art biographer and painter of the Baroque period. Biography Ridolfi was born in Lonigo near Vicenza. He was a pupil of the painter Antonio Vassilacchi (Aliense). He painted a ''Visitation'' for the Ognissanti and an ''Adoration of the Magi'' for San Giovanni Elemosinario in Venice. He copied Tintoretto's ''Christ Washing the Disciples' Feet'' in San Marcuola, before it came to the collection of King Charles I of England. Ridolfi's copy still remains in San Marcuola. He was certainly best known, in his own day and ever since, as an author on art. Carlo Ridolfi was also an important collector of drawings, such as Giorgio Vasari. Many of these drawings are conserved in the ''Christ Church Library'' (Oxford). Nicolas Régnier
Nicolas Régnier (1591–1667), known in Italy as Niccolò Renieri, was a painter, art dealer and art collector from the County of Hainaut, a French-speaking part of the Spanish Netherlands. He is often referred to as a Flemish artist because this term was often used to designate people from the Spanish Netherlands. After training in Antwerp, he was active in Italy where he was part of the international Caravaggesque movement. His subjects include genre scenes with card players, fortune tellers, soldiers and concerts, religious scenes, saints, mythological and allegorical scenes, and portraits. ''A Man with a Quilted Sleeve'' is a painting of about 1510 by the Venetian painter Titian in the National Gallery, London, measuring . Though the quality of the painting has always been praised, there has been much discussion as to the identity of the sitter. It was long thought to be a portrait of Ariosto, then a self-portrait, but in 2017 is called ''Portrait of Gerolamo (?) Barbarigo'' by the gallery, having also been called merely ''Portrait of a Man'', the title used here, ''The Man with the Blue Sleeve'', and no doubt other variants. Placing a parapet, a low wood or stone sill or ledge, between the subject and the viewer is a common feature of early Renaissance Italian portraits, as a useful way of solving "the principal compositional problem" of portraits at less than full-length, how "to justify the cutting of the figure". Ludovico Ariosto (; 8 September 1474 – 6 July 1533) was an Italian poet. He is best known as the author of the romance epic ''Orlando Furioso'' (1516). The poem, a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's ''Orlando Innamorato'', describes the adventures of Charlemagne, Orlando, and the Franks as they battle against the Saracens with diversions into many sideplots. The poem is transformed into a satire of the chivalric tradition. Ariosto composed the poem in the ottava rima rhyme scheme and introduced narrative commentary throughout the work. Ariosto also coined the term "humanism" (in Italian, ''umanesimo'') for choosing to focus upon the strengths and potential of humanity, rather than only upon its role as subordinate to God. Newton Booth Tarkington (July 29, 1869 – May 19, 1946) was an American novelist and dramatist best known for his novels ''The Magnificent Ambersons'' (1918) and '' Alice Adams'' (1921). He is one of only four novelists to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once, along with William Faulkner, John Updike, and Colson Whitehead.
