Porte de Vincennes () is a station on Line 1 of the Paris Métro, situated on the Cours de Vincennes, at the border of the 12th and 20th arrondissements of Paris. It is named after the ''Porte de Vincennes'', a gate at the former Thiers Wall, which was at the beginning of the road to Vincennes. History The station opened on 19 July 1900 as part of the first stage of line 1 between Porte de Vincennes and Porte Maillot on 19 July 1900, serving as its original eastern terminus. It was the site of the very first construction work on the Métro. Due to its status at the time as a terminal station, it featured a unique platform configuration, consisting of two diverging half-stations on a single-tracked loop. The southern half-station housed the arrival platform, and the northern half-station housed the departure platform. Each half-station consisted of a central island platform flanked by two tracks. The 12th arrondissement of Paris (''XIIe arrondissement'') is one of the 20 arrondissements of the capital city of France. Situated on the right bank of the River Seine, it is the easternmost arrondissement of Paris, as well as the largest by area. In 2019, it had a population of 139,297. The Château de Vincennes () is a former fortress and royal residence next to the town of Vincennes, on the eastern edge of Paris, alongside the Bois de Vincennes. It was largely built between 1361 and 1369, and was a preferred residence, after the Palais de la Cité, of French kings in the 14th to 16th century. It is particularly known for its "donjon" or keep, a fortified central tower, the tallest in Europe, built in the 14th century, and for the chapel, Sainte-Chapelle de Vincennes, begun in 1379 but not completed until 1552, which is an exceptional example of Flamboyant Gothic architecture. Juste Arnold Netter (20 September 1855 – 1 March 1936) was a physician, hygienist, pediatrician, bacteriologist, and biologist from France. He received the gold medal of the AP-HP in 1882 and was a professor at the faculty of medicine. He is known for his work on cerebrospinal meningitis, poliomyelitis, pneumococcal infections, encephalitis, and shingles. He was among the first to apply bacteriology to clinical medicine. Henri Albert Niessel (24 October 1866 – 26 December 1955) was a French general.
