Ponferrada () is a city of Spain, located in the autonomous community of Castile and León. Ponferrada, the second most populated municipality of the Province of León, is also the capital city of El Bierzo, the only Comarcas of Spain, ''comarca'' recognized as an administrative entity by law in the region. Surrounded by mountains, the city straddles the course of the Sil (river), Sil River. It is the last major town on the French Way, French route of the Camino de Santiago before it reaches Santiago de Compostela. In 2021, it had a population of 63,747. The University of León (ULE) is a public university based in the city of León (Spain), León (Spain), with an additional campus in Ponferrada. Sil (river)
The Sil is a river in León (Castile and León) and Galicia, Spain, a tributary of the Miño. Its total length is . The source of the Sil is in the Cantabrian Mountains, in La Cueta part of the Leonese municipality of Cabrillanes. It flows through the provinces of León and Ourense. The French Way (, , ) follows the GR 65 and is the most popular of the routes of the Way of St. James (), the ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Bierzo (DO)
Bierzo is a Spanish Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) for wines located in the northwest of the province of León (Castile and León, Spain) and covers about 3,000 km2. It borders on the provinces of Ourense, Lugo and Asturias in the north and in the south on areas of La Montaña, la Cabrera and La Meseta, in Léon. The area consists of numerous small valleys in the mountainous part ( Alto Bierzo) and of a wide, flat plain ( Bajo Bierzo).
