Poland At The Olympics
Poland first participated at the Olympic Games in 1924, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the 1984 Games, when they were forced to be part of the Soviet-led boycott of the 1984 Summer Olympics. Poland has also participated in every Winter Olympic Games. Polish athletes have won a total of 331 medals (80 gold, 100 silver, 151 bronze) in 21 different summer and 5 different winter sports and the country currently ranks 21st in the all-time Olympic Games medal count, with athletics as the top medal-producing sport. Poland is the second most successful country in total medals of those who have never hosted the Olympics. The nation's best overall performance at the Olympics occurred at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, with the country's athletes winning 7 gold, 6 silver and 13 bronze medals and finishing sixth in the medal table. The Polish Olympic Committee (, official acronym PKOl) is the National Olympic Committee representing Poland. A National Olympic Committee (NOC) is a national constituent of the worldwide Olympic movement. Eastern Bloc
The Eastern Bloc, also known as the Communist Bloc (Combloc), the Socialist Bloc, the Workers Bloc, and the Soviet Bloc, was an unofficial coalition of communist states of Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America that were aligned with the Soviet Union and existed during the Cold War (1947–1991). The 1980 Summer Olympics (), officially known as the Games of the XXII Olympiad () and officially branded as Moscow 1980 (), were an international multi-sport event held from 19 July to 3 August 1980 in Moscow, Soviet Union, in present-day Russia. The 1928 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the IX Olympiad (), was an international multi-sport event that was celebrated from 28 July to 12 August 1928 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The city of Amsterdam had previously bid for the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games. Still, it was obliged to give way to war-torn Antwerp in Belgium for the 1920 Summer Olympics, 1920 Games and Pierre de Coubertin's Paris for the 1924 Summer Olympics, 1924 Games. Halina Konopacka
Halina Konopacka (full name Leonarda Kazimiera Konopacka-Matuszewska-Szczerbińska; 26 February 1900 – 28 January 1989) was a Polish athlete. She won the discus throw event at the 1928 Summer Olympics, defeating American silver medal winner Lillian Copeland, breaking her own world record, and becoming the first Polish Olympic champion. After retiring from athletics she became a writer and poet. She immigrated to the United States after World War II, and died there. Biography Konopacka was born in Rawa Mazowiecka, Congress Poland, and grew up in Warsaw, where she trained in horse riding, swimming, and skating. Her whole family also played tennis, including her father Jakub, sister Czesława, and brother Tadeusz.
