Pogue's
The H. & S. Pogue Company, also known as Pogue's, was a Cincinnati, Ohio–based department store chain founded by two brothers, Henry and Samuel Pogue. Founded in 1863, it became one of the most prominent department store chains in the region, until it was sold in 1961 to Associated Dry Goods. Origins Henry Pogue emigrated from Cavan, Ireland, to Cincinnati in 1851, and worked as a clerk in a dry goods store. In 1863, he became head of Pogue & Jones dry goods store on West Fifth Street. Henry and his brother Samuel went on to buy out their uncle John Crawford's company, and renamed it H. & S. Pogue Dry Goods Company. Three other brothers subsequently joined their enterprise. Hess's, originally known as Hess Brothers, was a department store chain based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The company was founded a single store in 1897, and grew to nearly 80 stores by its commercial peak in the late 1980s. The chains stores were closed or sold off in a series of deals in the early to mid-1990s. Samuel Hannaford
Samuel Hannaford (10 April 1835 – 7 January 1911) was an American architect based in Cincinnati, Ohio. Some of the best known landmarks in the city, such as Music Hall and City Hall, were of his design. The bulk of Hannaford's work was done locally, over 300 buildings, but his residential designs appear through New England to the Midwest and the South. Biography Born in England, Hannaford immigrated with his family to Cincinnati at age nine. Hannaford attended public schools and graduated from Farmer's College, Cincinnati, where he studied architecture. Hannaford opened an office in 1857 and in 1887 formed the firm of Samuel Hannaford & Sons. At the time of his death, he was director of the Ohio Mechanics' Institute. The Stewart Dry Goods Company—alternately known as Stewart Dry Goods, or Stewart's—was a regional department store chain based in Louisville, Kentucky. At its height, the chain consisted of seven store locations in Kentucky and Indiana. The chain in its later years operated as a division of New York–based Associated Dry Goods. John Shillito & Co. (commonly known as Shillito's) was Cincinnati's first department store. History In 1817, John Shillito (November 1808 – September 1879) arrived in Cincinnati (from Greensburg, Pennsylvania). The nine-year-old lad was soon working for the Cincinnati business Blatchley & Simpson. In 1830, he left to form a partnership with William McLaughlin, selling dry goods. A year later, McLaughlin left the company, and was replaced with Robert W. Burnett and James Pullen. The firm of Shillito, Burnett & Pullen outgrew its first location, and in 1833 moved to the other side of Main Street between 4th and 5th Streets. McAlpin's was a Cincinnati-based department store founded in 1852 as Ellis, McAlpin & Co. McAlpin's opened their landmark downtown location on Fourth Street in 1880, taking over a building from their competitor Shillito's. In 1954, McAlpin's became the first Cincinnati department store to open a suburban site, in the Western Hills Shopping Center. Two decades later, McAlpin's became a division of Mercantile Stores.
