Piatt's Landing, Kentucky
Piatt's Landing was an early nineteenth century riverboat and ferry landing on the Ohio River in Boone County, Kentucky. It is located near Route 338 almost due west of downtown Union, Kentucky, Union. The landing and Winnfield Cottage, which no longer exists, were built by Robert Piatt, the grandfather of Civil War General Edward Canby. Ferries owned by the Piatts crossed the Ohio River to Indiana at several points; Touseytown to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Lawrenceburg, Rabbit Hash to Rising Sun, Indiana, Rising Sun, and East Bend, Kentucky, East Bend to North Landing. (Shaffer, p. 42) A number of the Piatts associated with this family also lived in Norwood, Ohio. The name Piatt is of Italian origin, according to N. L. Burlington is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Boone County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 15,926 at the 2010 census. History Burlington was incorporated in 1824. Burlington marks the county seat of Boone County. In June 1799, Boone County’s first court was set on 74 acres at the headwaters of Allens Fork. Known as Craig’s Camp, the county seat was named after early settler John Hawkins Craig. The next year, John Craig and Robert Johnson donated 74 acres at the Woolper Creek site for a town they called Wilmington. Court was held here in a log courthouse in January 1801 and the town was platted that September. The streets originally circled central “Publick Square,” but later two roads cut through it.
