Phillips' Ferry (Merced River)
Phillips' Ferry was a historical ferry crossing of the Merced River, located in present-day Merced County, California. History Phillips' Ferry was one of the three main crossings of the Merced River on the San Joaquin Valley section of the 19th century Stockton - Los Angeles Road. They were located within 2 miles (3.2 km) downstream of the rapids known as Merced Falls. Closest downstream to the falls was Phillips' Ferry; then Belts Ferry − later Murray's Ferry near the later town of Merced Falls; and then Young's Ferry a mile and a half below Murray's Ferry. John Phillips John Phillips was an Englishman who came overland to California in 1849. Merced River
The Merced River (), in the central part of the U.S. state of California, is a -long tributary of the San Joaquin River flowing from the Sierra Nevada into the San Joaquin Valley. It is most well known for its swift and steep course through the southern part of Yosemite National Park, where it is the primary watercourse flowing through Yosemite Valley. The river's character changes dramatically once it reaches the plains of the agricultural San Joaquin Valley, where it becomes a slow-moving meandering stream. The river first formed as the Sierra Nevada rose about 10 million years ago, and sediment eroded from its canyon helped form the flat floor of the San Joaquin Valley. George Gordon Belt
George Gordon Belt (1828–1869), soldier, 49er, businessman, judge, Confederate sympathizer who organized the Mason Henry Gang in California during the American Civil War. Early life and California George Gordon Belt was born on September 25, 1825, in Beltsville, Maryland. George Belt had joined Colonel Jonathan D. Stevenson's First Regiment of New York Volunteers that were raised as part of the American occupation army in California, during the Mexican–American War. Colonel Stevenson raised ten companies or 770 men to go to California with the understanding that they would after their service muster out and stay in California. Belt held the rank of quartermaster-sergeant when he was discharged in 1847 and settled in California. On April 7, 1848, George G. Belt married Bebiana Asorca and they had nine children by 1869. Merced Falls, California
Merced Falls (''Merced'', Spanish for "Mercy") is an unincorporated community in Merced County, California. It is located on the north bank of the Merced River east of Snelling, at an elevation of 348 feet (106 m). Merced Falls was named for a set of rapids on the Merced River. A post office operated at Merced Falls from 1856 to 1957. The town was founded here because in the California Gold Rush, the three main crossings of the Merced River on the Stockton - Los Angeles Road were located within downstream of the rapids of Merced Falls. Hornitos ( Spanish for "Little ovens") is a census-designated place in Mariposa County, California, United States. It is located on Burns Creek by road south of Coulterville, at an elevation of . The population was 38 at the 2020 census, down from 75 at the 2010 census.
