Philips of Marnix, Lord of Saint-Aldegonde, Lord of West-Souburg (Dutch: Filips van Marnix, heer van Sint-Aldegonde, heer van West-Souburg, French: Philippe de Marnix, seigneur de Sainte-Aldegonde; 7 March/20 July 1540 – 15 December 1598) was a Flemish and Dutch writer and statesman, and the probable author of the text of the Dutch national anthem, the ''Wilhelmus''. Biography - career Marnix of St. Aldegonde was born in Brussels, the son of Jacob of Marnix. He studied theology under John Calvin and Theodore Beza at Geneva. Returning to the Habsburg Netherlands in 1560, he threw himself into the cause of the Reformation, taking an active part in the compromise of the nobles in 1565 and the assembly of Sint-Truiden. He issued a pamphlet in justification of the iconoclastic movement Beeldenstorm which devastated many churches in Flanders in 1566, and on the Duke of Alba's arrival next year had to flee the country. Jacob de Gheyn II (also Jacques de Gheyn II) ( – 29 March 1629) was a Dutch Painting, painter and engraver, whose work shows the transition from Northern Mannerism to Dutch realism over the course of his career. Biography De Gheyn was born in Antwerp and received his first training from his father, Jacob de Gheyn I, a Stained glass, glass painter, engraver, and Technical drawing, draftsman. In 1585, he moved to Haarlem, where he studied under Hendrik Goltzius for the next five years. He moved again, to Leiden, in the middle of the 1590s. His work attracted the attention of wealthy sponsors, and his first commission was for an engraving of the Siege of Geertruidenberg (1593), Siege of Geertruidenberg from Maurice of Nassau, Prince of Orange. Habsburg Netherlands were the parts of the Low Countries that were ruled by sovereigns of the Holy Roman Empire's House of Habsburg. This rule began in 1482 and ended for the Northern Netherlands in 1581 and for the Southern Netherlands in 1797. Maassluis () is a town in the western Netherlands, in the province of South Holland. The municipality had a population of in and covered of which was water. It received town rights in 1811. History Maassluis was founded circa 1340 as a settlement next to a lock (in Dutch: ''sluis'') in the sea barrier between the North Sea and Rotterdam. Originally ''Maeslandsluys'', it was part of Maesland. In 1489 the settlement was sacked.
