Peter Blake (sailor)
Sir Peter James Blake (1 October 1948 – 5 December 2001) was a New Zealand yachtsman who won the 1989–1990 Whitbread Round the World Race, held the Jules Verne Trophy from 1994 to 1997 by setting the around the world sailing record as co-skipper of '' ENZA New Zealand'' along with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, and led New Zealand to successive victories in the America's Cup. Blake was shot and killed by pirates while monitoring environment change on the Amazon River on 5 December 2001. He was 53 years old. Early life and education Blake was born in 1948 in Auckland to artist and art director Brian Blake and photography engraver Joyce Wilson. He was the second of their four children. 1973–1974 Whitbread Round The World Race
The 1973–74 Whitbread Round the World Race, the first edition of the Whitbread Round the World Race, started off from Portsmouth, England on 8 September 1973. Seventeen yachts of various sizes and rigs took part. During the race three sailors were swept over board and died: Paul Waterhouse, Dominique Guillet and Bernie Hosking. Waterhouse and Guillet were never to be seen again. The Louis Vuitton Cup is the name of the Challenger (America's Cup), Challenger Selection Series sailing competition from 1983, named after its Sponsor (commercial), sponsor, Louis Vuitton. The winner of the competition became the Challenger (America's Cup), challenger to compete with the Defender (America's Cup), defender of the America's Cup. The competition for the 2017 America's Cup changed format and name to the ''2017 Louis Vuitton Challenger’s Trophy, Louis Vuitton Challenger’s Trophy''. Bowsprit Scandal
The bowsprit of a sailing vessel is a spar extending forward from the vessel's prow. The bowsprit is typically held down by a bobstay that counteracts the forces from the forestays. Around The World Sailing Record
The first around the world sailing record for circumnavigation of the world can be attributed to the surviving crew of Ferdinand Magellan's expedition, including the last captain Juan Sebastián Elcano who completed their journey in 1522. Although not in a single voyage but Magellan was technically the first to circumnavigate the globe since he was killed in the Mactan Islands and while in the Kingdom of Portugal's service, Magellan had already reached the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia on previous voyages traveling east (from 1505 to 1511–1512). By visiting this area again but now traveling west, Magellan achieved a nearly complete personal circumnavigation of the globe for the first time in history. Bruce Farr
Bruce Kenneth Farr (born 1949 in Auckland) is a New Zealand designer of racing and cruising yachts. Farrdesigned boats have won, challenged for, or placed highly in the Whitbread Round the World Race, America's Cup, and Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, among others. Farr's services to yacht design were recognised in the 1990 Queen's Birthday Honours, when he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He currently lives near Annapolis, Maryland, USA. Early boats Farr began building boats at the age of 13 near Warkworth north of Auckland. His first boats were plywood hard chine Moth class designs. The 1981–82 Whitbread Round the World Race was the third edition of the around-the-world sailing event Whitbread Round the World Race. On 29 August 1981, 29 boats started out from Southampton for the Whitbread Round the World Race. The maxi yacht ''Flyer II (yacht), Flyer II'' was designed by Germán Frers and built at the W. Huisman shipyard in 1981 for skipper Cornelius van Rietschoten. In an unusual feat, she won the race both on line honours and on handicap. Only 20 finished the race out of the 29 that started it.
