Pentatonix
Pentatonix (abbreviated PTX) are an American a cappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Matt Sallee, and Kevin Olusola. Characterized by their pop-style arrangements with vocal harmonies, scat singing, riffing, vocal percussion, and beatboxing, they produce cover versions of modern pop works or Christmas songs, sometimes in the form of medleys, along with original material. Pentatonix was formed in 2011 and subsequently won the third season of NBC's ''The Sing-Off,'' receiving $200,000 and a recording contract with Sony Music. Known for his high tenor voice, Grassi came to international attention as a founding performer in two groups—the a cappella quintet Pentatonix, and the duo Superfruit (duo), Superfruit with Pentatonix bandmate Scott Hoying. ''PTX, Volume 1'' is the debut extended play album by the a cappella group Pentatonix. It was released on June 26, 2012. Conception and development After winning the title of champion in the reality show ''The Sing-Off'', Pentatonix was signed to a record label, enabling them to pursue their goal of a musical career. The Sing-Off (season 3)
The third season of ''The Sing-Off'' premiered on September 19, 2011. The number of a cappella groups was increased from 10 to 16, resulting in a new format. The show created two brackets, with only half the groups performing each week for the first few weeks. Nick Lachey stayed as host for the new season, as did Ben Folds and Shawn Stockman as judges. New to the judges' table was Sara Bareilles, who replaces Nicole Scherzinger, who left after 2 seasons to become a judge on ''The X Factor''.
