Thrifty PayLess Holdings, Inc. was a pharmacy holding company that owned the Thrifty Drugs and PayLess Drug Stores chains in the western United States. The combined company was formed in April 1994 when Los Angeles–based TCH Corporation, the parent company of Thrifty Corporation and Thrifty Drug Stores, Inc., acquired the Kmart (United States), Kmart subsidiary PayLess Drug Stores Northwest, Inc. At the time of the merger, TCH Corporation was renamed Thrifty PayLess Holdings, Inc. and Thrifty operated 495 stores, PayLess operated 543 stores. In 1996, Rite Aid acquired 1,000 West Coast stores from Thrifty PayLess Holdings, creating a chain with over 3,500 drug stores. Thrifty PayLess, Inc. remained an active subsidiary of Rite Aid (owning stores purchased from Thrifty PayLess), as shown in the company's October 2023 Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings. The Skaggs Companies, Inc. was the predecessor to many famous United States retailing chains, including Safeway, Albertsons, Osco Drug, and Longs Drugs. The company owned several drugstore chains, but all of them were sold. Skaggs Cos. became American Stores in 1979. Pay Less Super Markets is a chain of nine supermarkets located in the central Indiana towns of Anderson, Lafayette, Muncie, and West Lafayette. There were two Pay Less grocery stores in Omaha that only lasted two years before being taken over by Cub Foods. Pay Less is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co. History The company was founded by H. J. Contos in 1947 in Anderson, Indiana. In 1960, a second store was opened in Lafayette, Indiana. Contos died in 1961, and the company was taken over by his son, Larry D. Contos. The company was acquired by The Kroger Company in 1999. Kroger today continues to operate the Pay Less banner under its central division, which included Owen's Market until that chain's phase-out in August 2020. Payless DIY was a chain of DIY stores in the United Kingdom during the 1980s. The defunct Payless DIY brand is owned by AHK Designs Ltd, who also own the intellectual property for Focus DIY and Do It All. History The name was first used from 1 January 1983 to rebrand the Marley Homecare chain. The change was done under the chairmanship of Tom O'Sullivan, MD Ted Lansdowne and Merchandising Director Doug Spickernell to counter public perception of the Marley name as good, reliable but expensive. Woodie's is an Irish DIY and home improvement retailing company. Founded in 1987 in Walkinstown, Dublin and opening the first shop in the same year, it is a part of Grafton Group plc. Payless ShoeSource Worldwide, LLC (formerly known as Payless ShoeSource Inc.), was an American multinational discount footwear chain. Established in 1956 by cousins Louis and Shaol Pozez. Payless was a privately held company owned by Blum Capital, and Golden Gate Capital.
