Paw Paw Old Mayor's Office And Jail
The Paw Paw Old Mayor's Office and Jail is an historic building in Paw Paw, Morgan County, West Virginia. It was built in 1893 in a simple Folk Victorian architectural style. It is a rectangular one story woodframe building constructed in two distinct sections. The front portion was used as the mayor's office and for town council meetings while the rear portion contained the town jail. The building served as the seat of government, and for social and civil functions until 1977. The Paw Paw Old Mayor's Office and Jail was one of seventeen new historic sites in WV added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. Paw Paw is a town in Morgan County, West Virginia, Morgan County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 410 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. The town is known for the nearby Paw Paw Tunnel. Paw Paw was incorporated by the Circuit Court of Morgan County on April 8, 1891, and named after Asimina triloba, pawpaw, a wild fruit that grows in abundance throughout this region. On September 14, 2024 a group of local citizens organized by Maria Gloyd hosted the inaugural Pawpaw Festival in the Town Park. Hundreds of people attended the festival to hear lectures on how to grow and cultivate Pawpaw fruit, and listen to Appalachian music performed by the Paw Paw Community Choir, Ben Townsend, the Critton Hollow String Band, and Mary Hott with the Carpenter Ants. Morgan County is a county located in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,063. Its county seat is Berkeley Springs. The county was formed in 1820 from parts of Hampshire and Berkeley Counties and named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, prominent soldier of the American Revolutionary War. The county and town of Bath are considered excellent jumping-off points for exploring the Potomac and Cacapon Rivers just to the north and west, respectively.
