Pavel Mareš (speedway Rider)
Pavel Mareš (20 January 1943 – 4 June 2023) was an international speedway rider from the Czech Republic. Speedway career Mareš won the silver medal in the 1965 Czechoslovakian Individual Speedway Championship. He also partnered Václav Verner to the World Pairs final at the 1971 Speedway World Pairs Championship where they finished just outside the medals in fourth place behind winners Poland. Mareš also raced in ice speedway and participated in the 1967 Individual Ice Speedway World Championship. Like many Czech riders of the time, the Czechsolovak authorities rarely allowed riders to compete for British league teams but they did allow club sides such as Prague to tour the United Kingdom, which allowed Mareš to race in Britain in 1967 and again in 1971. By 1974 he was a recognised name in speedway circles in the United Kingdom despite not being able to ride in the British leagues. Czech Republic Individual Speedway Championship
The Czech Republic Individual Speedway Championship is a motorcycle speedway championship held each year to determine the Czech Republic national champion. History It was first staged in 1949, and was known as the Czechoslovakia Individual Speedway Championship until 1992, when the country then divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Jiřà Štancl is the most successful rider having won the title 12 times, including ten years in a row from 1972 to 1981. The 1971 Speedway World Pairs Championship was the second FIM Speedway World Pairs Championship. The final took place on 11 July 1971 in Rybnik, Poland. The championship was won by Poland (maximum 30 points) who beat New Zealand (25 points) and Sweden (22 points). Speedway World Pairs Championship
The Speedway World Pairs Championship was an annual motorcycle speedway event held annually in different countries. The first competition was held in 1968, and the final competition was held in 1993. In 1994, it was merged with the World Team Cup to create the Speedway World Cup, which held its final edition in 2017. The concept of an international pairs championship was re-established in the form of the Speedway of Nations, held for the first time in 2018. Rules The final was competed between seven national teams, and two riders represented each national team. Each pairing rode against each other once. The pair with the highest combined score were declared the Champions. From 1991, a third rider could act as a reserve. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Václav Verner
Václav Verner (6 May 1949 – 13 March 2018) was an international speedway rider. He earned 42 international caps for the Czechoslovakia national speedway team. Speedway career He was the individual champion of Czechoslovakia, after winning the Czechoslovakian Championship in 1971, finished runner-up five time (1970, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980) and third twice (1975, 1981). In 1974, he represented his country in a test series against England. He first rode in the top tier of British Speedway for Exeter Falcons in 1977. He later rode for Poole Pirates and Exeter Falcons. Rybnik Municipal Stadium
Rybnik Stadium (Polish - Stadion Miejski w Rybniku) is a motorcycle speedway and association football stadium located in the northern part of Rybnik off Gliwicka 72. The stadium is the home arena of Polish speedway team KS ROW Rybnik who compete in the Team Speedway Polish Championship. The capacity is 10,304 (all seated) and the stadium forms part of the wider complex known as the Municipal Sports and Recreation Center. History The stadium opened in June 1939 and underwent significant redevelopment in the winter of 2000, the track was rebuilt, a new drainage system was installed and renovation of the stands took place.
