Partalansaari
Partalansaari is an island located in lake Saimaa. A large portion of the island belongs to the municipality of Sulkava while a smaller part belongs to Puumala. The island is surrounded by the largest watersheds — on the east is Lepistönselkä, on the northwest is Enonvesi and on the southwest Haapaselkä. There are more than 80 lakes and ponds within the island and the largest are lakes Kulkemusjärvi and Saajuu. The island has a road connection to the mainland. The villages that are covered by the municipality of Sulkava are Kaartilankoski in the north, Karjulanmäki in the west and Auvila in the southeast. Puumala includes the villages of Keriniemi and Kietävälä. The island has approximately 400 permanent residents. There are a lot of summer residents as well. Sulkavan Suursoudut
Sulkavan Suursoudut (English: ) is Finland's biggest rowing race, held every July in Sulkava, Southern Savonia, Eastern Finland. It is organised by the Sulkava Association. The 1st race was held in 1968. History The first competition was held in 1968 with 38 competitors. The winner was 67-year-old Einari Luukkonen in a time of 8 hours, 29 minutes, and 40 seconds. The boats used in competitions are Finnish traditional style wooden rowing boats, normally now made of plywood. Since 1984 there have been competitions in 40 foot 'church-boats', 14 seat craft plus a cox that were traditionally used in church trips. Today the four-day competition involves approximately 8000 rowers with roughly 20,000 people visiting to watch the race. In 2007 the 40th anniversary of the race was held and the four-day competition extended to six days. The race route is approximately . Puumala
Puumala () is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the Southern Savonia region. The municipality has a population of () and covers an area of of which is water. The population density is . The municipality is unilingually Finnish. The main road route through the region is route 62, which connects to Mikkeli to the north and Imatra to the south. Until the year 1995 a cable ferry connected the two sides of Puumalansalmi-strait. In 1995, a bridge replaced the ferry. The bridge is a very dominant structure when looking Puumala town center from a distance. Puumala has relatively good services compared to the amount of population. In the town center is situated a post office, an Alko store, a kiosk, several supermarkets and a few restaurants. The reason for the survival of these entrepreneurs is the arrival of summer inhabitants who triple the population of Puumala during the season.
