Panamanian Reggaetón
Brief description In Panama, reggaetón is a musical genre that is a combination of reggae, Jamaican dancehall, hip hop, soca, bomba, plena and various Caribbean music styles. Lyrics to reggaetón are typically sexually explicit and are generally rapped, but many reggaetón artists will also sing their lyrics. History Beginnings Reggaetón, which was formerly called reggae en Español, originated on the isthmus of Panama. The roots of Panamanian reggaetón can be traced back to the creation of the Panama Canal. During the construction of the Canal, up to 12,000 African workers and their families were brought to Panama from the West Indies. With them, these migrants brought Afrocentric music, such as rumba, mambo, the cha-cha-cha and calypso. Reggae
Reggae () is a music genre that originated in Jamaica during the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its Jamaican diaspora, diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, "Do the Reggay", was the first popular song to use the word ''reggae'', effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. Reggae is rooted in traditional Jamaican Kumina, Pukkumina, Revival Zion, Nyabinghi, and burru drumming. Jamaican reggae music evolved out of the earlier genres mento, ska and rocksteady. Dembow Beat
The dembow beat or dembow riddim is a musical rhythm best known for its use as the core percussion element in reggaeton music, having taken its name from the 1990 dancehall song "Dem Bow" by Shabba Ranks. The rhythm, first developed by Jamaican and Afro-Panamanian producers in the early 1990s as reggaeton was beginning to form, employs the tresillo pattern that is common in Latin American music. Characteristics The dembow rhythm is usually employed as a loop, in line with reggaeton's mainly electronic production. Described as having a "bounce", it has a 3+3+2 (tresillo) cross-rhythm with a slight syncopation on every other half-beat. Blanqueamiento
Blanqueamiento in Spanish, or branqueamento in Portuguese (both meaning ''whitening''), was a social, political, and economic practice used in many post-colonial countries in the Americas and Oceania to "improve the race" (''mejorar la raza'') towards a supposed ideal of whiteness. The term blanqueamiento is rooted in Latin America and is used more or less synonymously with racial whitening. However, blanqueamiento can be considered in both the symbolic and biological sense. Symbolically, blanqueamiento represents an ideology that emerged from legacies of European colonialism, described by Anibal Quijano's theory of coloniality of power, which caters to white dominance in social hierarchies. Gasolina
"Gasolina" () is a song on Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee's 2004 album '' Barrio Fino'' (''Nice 'Hood''). Glory sings the line "dame más gasolina" ("give me more gas"), although she is not credited. The song was released as the album's lead single in October 2004 and became a hit in 2005, peaking inside the top 10 on some of the charts it entered. "Gasolina" was the first reggaeton song to be nominated for the Latin Grammy Award for Record of the Year. Oye Mi Canto
"Oye Mi Canto" () is a reggaeton single (music), single by N.O.R.E. The song was originally released in 2004 as the lead single from the album ''1 Fan a Day'', which was heretofore unreleased. It is his second biggest hit, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100. It was later included on the 2006 album ''N.O.R.E. y la Familia...Ya Tú Sabe''. The song features Nina Sky and reggaeton artists Gem Star, Daddy Yankee and Big Mato. The song originally featured Tego Calderón in place of Daddy Yankee but was later changed for the video. Martha Ivelisse Pesante Rodríguez (born March 4, 1972), known professionally as Ivy Queen, is a Puerto Rican rapper, singer and actress. Wisin & Yandel
Wisin & Yandel were a Puerto Rican reggaeton duo consisting of Wisin and Yandel. They started their career in 1998 and stayed together until 2023, winning several awards including a Grammy Award in 2009. They became the first and the only reggaeton artists to win one. In late 2013, they announced they would take a pause in their career as a duo, after their Líderes Tour. In a 2014 interview with ''People en Español'', Yandel confirmed that the group would not be disbanding.
