Ottawa Rough Riders
The Ottawa Rough Riders were a Canadian Football League team based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded in 1876. Formerly one of the oldest and longest-lived professional sports teams in North America, the Rough Riders won the Grey Cup championship nine times. Their most dominant era was the 1960s and 1970s, in which they won five Grey Cups. The team's fortunes waned in the 1980s and 1990s, and they ultimately ceased operations following the 1996 CFL season, 1996 season. Five years later, a new CFL team known as the Ottawa Renegades was founded, though they suspended operations in 2006. The Ottawa Redblacks, which own the Rough Riders intellectual properties, joined the league in 2014. Tony Gabriel
Anthony Michael Peter Gabriel (born December 11, 1948) is a former professional Canadian football pass receiver who played in the Canadian Football League from 1971 to 1981. He played for both the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Ottawa Rough Riders. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in August 1985. In 2014, he was inducted into the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. Early life Gabriel was born in Burlington, Ontario on December 11, 1948, and attended Burlington Central High School from 1962 to 1967. While at BCHS, Gabriel played both football and basketball. He was a member of the Junior Basketball Championship team from 1965. He was honoured in 1967, with the M.M. Robinson Gold Medal for top student athlete at BCHS. Two memories that stick out in his mind from being a Trojan were, firstly, not making the football team in his grade ten year; and in his grade 13 year, scoring 48 points in a senior basketball game to completely outscore the entire Nelson team. Tom Burgess (Canadian Football)
Tom Burgess (born March 6, 1964) is a former all-star quarterback in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Burgess was a graduate of Colgate University, playing from 1982 to 1985, and was inducted into the Colgate University Athletic Hall of Honor in 1986. As a senior on the 1985 squad, he was named honorable mention Associated Press All-American after setting 14 school records in passing and total offense. He finished ninth in the nation in total offense with 266.1 yards per game. Burgess also received Colgate's Andy Kerr Trophy, given annually to the squad's most valuable offensive player. He threw for a school-record 2,565 yards in 1985 and gained a school-record 2,927 yards of total offense. Damon Allen
Damon L. Allen (born July 29, 1963) is a former professional quarterback who played in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He is currently fourth in all-time professional football passing yards and second in all-time CFL passing yards after he was surpassed for first place by the Montréal Alouettes' Anthony Calvillo on October 10, 2011. Allen retired as professional football's all-time leading passer with 72,381 passing yards after he surpassed Warren Moon's total of 70,553 yards (in both the CFL and NFL combined) on September 4, 2006 in the annual Labour Day Classic. He also retired in third place in all-time CFL rushing yards with 11,920 yards, behind Mike Pringle and George Reed. Reggie Barnes (running Back)
Reggie Barnes (born October 19, 1967 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is a former running back in the Canadian Football League. Barnes attended the Delaware State University where he rushed for 1336 yards in 1988 and 3282 during his college career. He was not drafted by the NFL, but signed as a free agent with the New York Jets in 1989 where he spent the entire season on the practice squad. He came to Canada in 1990, and made an immediate impression with the Ottawa Rough Riders. He rushed for 1260 yards and 5 touchdowns on his way to winning the CFL's Most Outstanding Rookie Award. An interesting fact is that CFL legend and Ottawa quarterback Damon Allen also rushed for 1,000 yards that year. Jock Climie
Jock Climie is a Canadian retired Canadian Football League player who played the slotback position primarily with the Ottawa Rough Riders, and Montreal Alouettes. He is also a former sportscaster with Canadian sports television channel TSN as part of the ''CFL on TSN'' studio panel during the CFL season. Climie is currently a labour and employment lawyer at the Ottawa law firm of Emond Harnden. College career While attending Queen's University, Climie played university football for the Queen's Golden Gaels. His 1,091 receiving yards in 1988 was at the time the single-season record for Canadian university football; it has since been broken, first by Don Blair (University of Calgary), then by Andy Fantuz (University of Western Ontario); Fantuz played one more game during his college career. David Lamar Williams (born June 10, 1963) is a former American football wide receiver. Williams was named consensus All-American twice at the University of Illinois, and is an inducted member of the College Football Hall of Fame as well as the Canadian Football Hall of Fame . Margene Adkins (born April 30, 1947) is a former professional American football wide receiver in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints and New York Jets. He also was a member of the Ottawa Rough Riders in the Canadian Football League and the Chicago Winds in the World Football League. He played college football at Henderson County Junior College. Stephen Jones (born June 8, 1960) is a former American football wide receiver who played ten seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL) with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Edmonton Eskimos and Ottawa Rough Riders. He played college football at Central Michigan University. Jones was a member of the Edmonton Eskimos team that won the 75th Grey Cup. Hamilton Tigers (football)
The Hamilton Tigers were a Canadian football team based in Hamilton, Ontario that played in the Ontario Rugby Football Union from 1883 to 1906 and 1948 to 1949 and in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union from 1907 to 1947. The club was a founding member of both the ORFU in 1883 and the IRFU in 1907. Throughout their history, the Tigers won five Grey Cup Championships and two Dominion Championships, including the 1908 title, the year before the Grey Cup was first awarded. Ken Charlton (Canadian Football)
Kenneth Charlton (April 20, 1920 – May 1, 2004) was a running back for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and is a member of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, where he was elected in 1992. He was also named to the Roughriders Plaza of Honour and to the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. Career Ken Charlton grew up in Regina and played high school football at Central Collegiate. He played his junior football with the Regina West End Juniors (1938) and Regina Park Dale (1939-40). He signed with the Regina Roughriders in 1941 and was named to the CFL All-Star team his rookie year. Charlton joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Winnipeg, so he became a member of the Winnipeg RCAF Bombers on their way for the Grey Cup. Charlton returned to football after a hiatus during the war, joining the Roughriders in 1943 and making the CFL All-Star team once more.
