Ostinato
In music, an ostinato (; derived from the Italian word for ''stubborn'', compare English ''obstinate'') is a motif or phrase that persistently repeats in the same musical voice, frequently in the same pitch. Well-known ostinato-based pieces include classical compositions such as Ravel's ''Boléro'' and the '' Carol of the Bells'', and popular songs such as John Lennon’s “Mind Games” (1973), Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder's " I Feel Love" (1977), Henry Mancini's theme from ''Peter Gunn'' (1959), The Who's " Baba O'Riley" (1971), The Verve's " Bitter Sweet Symphony" (1997), and Flo Rida's " Low" (2007). Both ''ostinatos'' and ''ostinati'' are accepted English plural forms, the latter reflecting the word's Italian etymology. "Peter Gunn" is the theme music composed by Henry Mancini for the television show of the same name. ''Boléro'' is a 1928 work for large orchestra by French composer Maurice Ravel. It is one of Ravel's most famous compositions. It was also one of his last completed works before illness diminished his ability to write music. Composition The work's creation was set in motion by a commission from the dancer Ida Rubinstein, who asked Ravel for an orchestral transcription of six pieces from Isaac Albéniz's set of piano pieces, ''Iberia (Albéniz), Iberia''. Repetition is important in music, where sounds or sequences are often repeated. It may be called restatement, such as the restatement of a theme (music), theme. While it plays a role in all music, with noise and musical tones lying along a spectrum from irregular to frequency, periodic sounds, it is especially prominent in specific styles. Roger Kamien (born 1934) is a retired professor emeritus of musicology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He was born in Paris, and was raised in America. He is the author of the book ''Music: An Appreciation'', which is intended to show students the basics and the importance of music. It is considered essentially a textbook because''of'' its use mostly in colleges (and sometimes in high schools).
