Orchestre Français Des Jeunes
The Orchestre Français des Jeunes (literal translation: ''French Youth Orchestra'', , OFJ) is the national youth orchestra of France. The OFJ is a member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras. History The French Ministry of Culture founded the OFJ in 1982. It consists of young musicians of ages 16 to 25, selected by audition. In 2013, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Élysée Treaty, the OFJ performed a series of concerts together with its German counterpart, the Bundesjugendorchester, under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies. Michael Schønwandt served as music director of the OFJ from 2021 to the close of 2024. In September 2023, the OFJ announced the appointment of Kristiina Poska as its next music director, the first female conductor ever named to the post, effective in the summer of 2025. A youth orchestra is an orchestra made of Youth, young musicians, typically ranging from pre-teens or teenagers to those of Music school, conservatory age. Depending on the age range and selectiveness, they may serve different purposes. Marek Janowski
Marek Janowski (born 18 February 1939 in Warsaw) is a Polish-born German conductor. Biography Janowski grew up in Wuppertal, near Cologne, after his mother traveled there at the start of World War II to be with her parents. His father disappeared in Poland during the war. Janowski served as music director in Freiburg and at the Dortmund Opera conducting the Dortmunder Philharmoniker, the latter from 1973 to 1979. From 1983 to 1987 he was principal conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He served as ''Kapellmeister'' of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne from 1986 to 1990. He developed an important profile in France as well, becoming music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (then called the Nouvel Orchestre Philharmonique) in Paris in 1984 and retaining that post until 2000. Fabien Gabel
Fabien Gabel (born 10 September 1975) is a French conductor. Biography As a youth, Gabel began trumpet studies at age 6. He continued his music education at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he won a first prize in 1996, and at the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. His interest in conducting began in his mid-20's. Gabel won the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in November 2004, and subsequently served as an assistant conductor with the London Symphony Orchestra as a result of this award. Gabel was music director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec from 2012 to 2021. Gabel served as music director of the Orchestre Français des Jeunes, initially for the period from 2017 to 2018, and subsequently continuing through 2020. David Zinman (born July 9, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York) is a retired American conductor and violinist. Education After violin studies at Oberlin Conservatory, Zinman studied theory and composition at the University of Minnesota, earning his M.A. in 1963. He took up conducting at Tanglewood and from 1958 to 1962 worked in Maine with Pierre Monteux; he served as Monteux's assistant from 1961 to 1964. Kwamé Ryan (born in Toronto, Ontario) is a Trinidadian-Canadian conductor. Biography Early history and education Ryan is the son of Joya Gomez, a school teacher and actress and Selwyn Ryan, a university professor. He had his primary and early musical education at the University School, St Augustine, Trinidad. A month after his birth, the family moved to Uganda. Several years later, the family moved to Trinidad. He studied piano, violin and voice privately. Ryan subsequently moved to the United Kingdom, where he attended Oakham School, in Rutland, England. Jean-Claude Probst (born 7 December 1935), known professionally as Jean-Claude Casadesus, is a French Conducting, conductor. Biography Casadesus was born in Paris on 7 December 1935, the son of actress Gisèle Casadesus and her husband Lucien Pascal. He began his career as a percussionist before studying composition and conducting with Pierre Dervaux and Pierre Boulez. In 1969 he was hired as assistant conductor at the Paris Opéra and the Opéra-Comique. In 1971 he co-founded the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire with Pierre Dervaux, and acted as Dervaux's deputy there until 1976. Jesús López Cobos (25 February 1940 – 2 March 2018) was a Spanish conductor. Early life and career López Cobos was born in Toro, Zamora, Spain. He studied at Complutense University of Madrid and graduated with a degree in philosophy.
