Its name was taken from the lyrics of one of Banhart's earliest songs, "Sunrise (A Long Time Ago)". It was the first release by Devendra on Young God Records and it came out on October 28, 2002. Devendra Obi Banhart (born May 30, 1981) is an American singer-songwriter and visual artist. Banhart was born in Texas and raised in Venezuela and California. In 2000, he dropped out of the San Francisco Art Institute to pursue a musical career. In 2002, Banhart released his debut album and is best known for his albums in the late 2000s such as '' Cripple Crow'' and '' Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon''. He has since expanded his career to incorporate his interest and training in the visual arts. Early life Banhart was born in Houston, Texas, to a Venezuelan mother, María Eugenia Rísquez, and an American father, Robert Gary Banhart. His mother worked as a model. Psychedelic folk (sometimes acid folk or freak folk) is a loosely defined form of psychedelic music that originated in the 1960s. Lo-fi (also typeset as lofi or low-fi; short for low fidelity) is a music or production quality in which elements usually regarded as imperfections in the context of a recording or performance are present, sometimes as a deliberate stylistic choice. Young God Records
Young God Records is an independent record label formed by Michael Gira in 1990 that specializes in experimental, avant-garde and often non genre-specific releases. The label was named after an EP released by Gira's band Swans called '' Young God''. The label's original intent was to facilitate the release of Swans' music, but while the band was disbanded Young God grew to host the Angels of Light as well as a number of other unique bands and artists, including: Akron/Family, Devendra Banhart, Lisa Germano, Ulan Bator, and Mi and L'au. Swans was re-formed in 2010, and began again releasing music under the Young God label. Spongehead were an American noise rock band formed in Brooklyn, New York, formed in 1985. The band was formed by brothers David and Doug Henderson and drummer Mark Kirby. Their fusion of jazz, blues and funk music was compared to Pere Ubu and Barkmarket, whose bandleader, Dave Sardy has worked with Spongehead on most of their albums. History Spongehead formed in Brooklyn in 1985, featuring Dave Henderson on saxophone, Doug Henderson on vocals and guitar, and Mark Kirby on drums. With Kramer producing, the band released their 1988 debut '' Potted Meat Spread'' on Shimmy Disc. The band began to tighten musically and they released '' Legitimate Beef'' in 1991. Michael Gira
Michael Rolfe Gira (; born February 19, 1954) is an American singer-songwriter, composer, author and artist. Now based in New Mexico, he founded the band Swans, in which he sings and plays guitar, in New York City in the 1980s at the height of the no wave movement. He is also the founder of Young God Records and previously fronted Angels of Light. Early life Michael Rolfe Gira was born February 19, 1954, in Los Angeles to Alice (née Shulte), originally from Iowa, and Robert Pierre Gira. His mother was an alcoholic, and Gira spent much of his early life caring for his younger brother. Gira has commented that his parents were "not around much" during his early childhood. As an adolescent, Gira was arrested in California several times for petty crimes.
