Gloria Galeano Garcés
Gloria Amparo Galeano Garcés (April 22, 1958 – March 23, 2016) was a Colombian botanist and agronomist specializing in the Arecaceae, palm family. Galeano was a faculty member at the National University of Colombia, and was the director of the Institute of Natural Sciences from 2003 to 2006. She received her Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D. from the University of Aarhus, Denmark in 1997. Galeano authored Taxonomy (biology), taxonomic descriptions of 58 species, subspecies and varieties of plants, especially in the Arecaceae, palm family. She published 17 books, 68 scientific papers, and 15 book chapters, mostly on palm and its taxonomy, systematics, ecology, uses, traditional knowledge, ecology, conservation and harvest impacts of Colombian plants and Neotropical palms. She also co-authored a field guide to the palms of the Americas. In 1996 she won the science prize from Fundación Alejandro Angel Escobar for the ''Field guide to American palms'' (co-authored by Andrew Henderso ...

Flowering Plant
Flowering plants are plants that bear flowers and fruits, and form the clade Angiospermae (). The term angiosperm is derived from the Ancient Greek, Greek words (; 'container, vessel') and (; 'seed'), meaning that the seeds are enclosed within a fruit. The group was formerly called Magnoliophyta. Angiosperms are by far the most diverse group of Embryophyte, land plants with 64 Order (biology), orders, 416 Family (biology), families, approximately 13,000 known Genus, genera and 300,000 known species. They include all forbs (flowering plants without a woody Plant stem, stem), grasses and grass-like plants, a vast majority of broad-leaved trees, shrubs and vines, and most aquatic plants. Angiosperms are distinguished from the other major seed plant clade, the gymnosperms, by having flowers, xylem consisting of vessel elements instead of tracheids, endosperm within their seeds, and fruits that completely envelop the seeds. The ancestors of flowering plants diverged from the commo ...

Arecaceae
The Arecaceae () is a family (biology), family of perennial plant, perennial, flowering plants in the Monocotyledon, monocot order Arecales. Their growth form can be climbing palm, climbers, shrubs, tree-like and stemless plants, all commonly known as palms. Those having a tree-like form are colloquially called palm trees. Currently, 181 Genus, genera with around 2,600 species are known, most of which are restricted to tropics, tropical and subtropics, subtropical climates. Most palms are distinguished by their large, compound, evergreen leaves, known as fronds, arranged at the top of an unbranched stem, except for the Hyphaene genus, who has branched palms. However, palms exhibit an enormous diversity in physical characteristics and inhabit nearly every type of Habitat (ecology), habitat within their range, from rainforests to deserts. Palms are among the best known and most extensively Horticulture, cultivated plant families. They have been important to humans throughout much ...

Oenocarpus
''Oenocarpus'' is a genus of pinnate-leaved palms (Arecaceae) native to Trinidad, southern Central and tropical South America. (2004): World Checklist of Arecaceae &ndash''Oenocarpus'' The Board of Trustees of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Retrieved 2008-DEC-24. With nine species and one natural hybrid, the genus is distributed from Costa Rica and Trinidad in the north to Brazil and Bolivia in the south. Common names in their native range are ''bacaba'' in Brazil, and ''palma milpesos'' (or just ''milpesos'') in Spanish-speaking countries. These terms may also refer to the best-known member of this genus, '' O. bacaba'', but more precise common names exist for that species. The fruit of ''Oenocarpus'' palms are food for various animals, such as the green aracari ('' Pteroglossus viridis'') for which ''O. bacaba'' fruit are a mainstay food. They are also locally eaten by humans, and these palms are also used in folk medicine. Their wood is useful for handicraft and the fruit ...

Data Deficient Plants
Data ( , ) are a collection of discrete or continuous value (semiotics), values that convey information, describing the quantity, qualitative property, quality, fact, statistics, other basic units of meaning, or simply sequences of symbols that may be further interpretation (logic), interpreted formally. A datum is an individual value in a collection of data. Data are usually organized into structures such as table (information), tables that provide additional context and meaning, and may themselves be used as data in larger structures. Data may be Data (computer science), used as variable (research), variables in a computational process. Data may represent abstract ideas or concrete measurements. Data are commonly used in scientific research, economics, and virtually every other form of human organizational activity. Examples of data sets include price indices (such as the consumer price index), unemployment rates, literacy rates, and census data. In this context, data repr ...

Endemic Flora Of Colombia
Endemism is the state of a species being found only in a single defined geographic location, such as an island, state, nation, country or other defined zone; organisms that are indigenous to a place are not endemic to it if they are also found elsewhere. For example, the Cape sugarbird is found exclusively in southwestern South Africa and is therefore said to be ''endemic'' to that particular part of the world. An endemic species can also be referred to as an ''endemism'' or, in scientific literature, as an ''endemite''. Similarly, many species found in the Western ghats of India are examples of endemism. Endemism is an important concept in conservation biology for measuring biodiversity in a particular place and evaluating the risk of extinction for species. Endemism is also of interest in evolutionary biology, because it provides clues about how changes in the environment cause species to undergo range shifts (potentially expanding their range into a larger area or becomin ...
